I was going to try to mow some after work, but it was thundering when I got home. I quickly changed into coop clothes, to check food and water before the storm hit. And then the thunder stopped. And so I mowed.
I made a point to do the woods side of the coops, which I had skipped last week. It looks SO much better.
The chickens always get excited when I mow, and I thought it was because they're anticipating clippings, but I recently noticed that insects fly or jump to escape the mower, and often wind up in the coop area! No wonder my flocks start cackling when I crank the mower.
After cutting most of the backyard (which I'd also skipped last week), and around the coops I dumped the clippings in the coops. The chicks acted unsure of the big pile of green that the adults were attacking. They'll learn. I noticed that they've been using the 5 gallon waterer, drinking from the cups, so I'll be removing the chick waterer from their brooder, probably tomorrow. I'll wash it and the flat glass pebbles, getting it ready in case I am blessed with more chicks.
I have two 100 gallon ponds. Pond #1's water level was low, so I ran a hose from the rain barrel and topped it off. I checked the skimmer and surprised a HUGE bullfrog! She was captured, and then rehomed to a large pond a couple miles away. That's #14 I have removed this year! No wonder I don't get treefrogs singing their love songs anymore, the bullfrogs eat them all. And they eat the pretty Leopard and Green frogs, too. Good riddance.
I went back and finished mowing the back yard, over by the fig tree just as it started to sprinkle. I dumped the rest of the clippings in a couple flower gardens, put up the mower, and came inside. And the rain stopped.
But I got most of the second half of the backyard done. It feels good.
