Bloat in Goats

Bloat

Bloat is easy to recognize if you know what you’re looking for. The first thing you need to do is KNOW YOUR GOAT. Then look for the symptoms of bloat when your goat seems “off”. Not every goat will have every symptom of bloat, so knowing your goat is key here.

Symptoms of bloat early on:

*High, tight rumen area (left side of the goat)

*Grinding teeth (a sign of pain)

*Off feed, not chewing cud

*Extending the neck and holding it or hanging of the head

*Moaning / Groaning

*Kicking belly and crying out in pain (rule out urinary calculi “UC” if this is a wether)

*No belching

*No rumen sounds when you listen to the left side of the goat (normal is a gurgling stomach sound)

Symptoms of bloat later on:

*Obvious distress, crying in pain, gasping for air

*Tongue / lips turning blue / purplish

*Goat down and unable to get up on its own

*Eyes rolling into the back of the head

*Laying on side with legs stretched out straight
