Baby girl is so much better tonight. She’s got a snotty nose now so that supports my aspiration pneumonia theory. She took some milk from the bottle, but she’s definitely been able to nurse as well.

Patti’s lambs are a ram and a ewe. Both are chunky beasts.

Glad to hear you caught in time. Couple days of meds and she'll prob be fine. Caught early!

I’ve been calling her Snot-Rocket . I’m starting to think that she might be at least partially blind. She gets around ok, but nursing has been a problem. She can’t always seem to locate a nipple. I’m still supplementing her with a bottle.

Could she have an eye infection, too?

I’m glad Snot-Rocket is doing better and I hope she continues to get better. She’s in good hands.

Maybe the infection is hindering her head lifting. Might clear after infection subsides.

Potentially.

I had an angus bottle calf years ago that we got for cheap because she was born blind. I did some research and decided that, barring something genetic, her blindness was most likely caused by a vitamin deficiency or infection. A few shots of antibiotics and she completely regained her sight.

Any eye problems of any sort, the calves always get Vit A shot, here, along with any other treatment. Have had many clear up to nearly 100% eye sight again...
I have had trouble finding Vit A recently...was always over the counter with the Vit B complex you could buy...

The Multi Min vitamin that you get from the vet is a good one... don't know if it is dosed for sheep or lambs... but I would think so... since there is more selenium in it than the USDA "guidelines" it is VET-obtained, not over the counter... and it is EXPENSIVE... but we give it to all newly acquired (bought) animals that come here on the place... along with the usual blackleg and vaccines. Seems to really help boost the immune system in times of stress... like when we buy something....

Her eyes seemed a little cloudy last night, but today they look better and she gets around fine now.

Ultimately, her biggest issue is a cleft palate. I checked her mouth today because even as hungry as she is, she doesn’t inhale a bottle like a normal bottle lamb. She also always has milk coming back out her nose while eating. That also explains why she has been unable to master nursing on her mom.

I’ll be tubing her for her meals for a while. I’m going to try a nipple made for human babies with cleft palate.

I’m very proud of all my first time mamas this year. Every single one has been excellent so far. 1 first-timer left to go.
