I"m as nervous as a new dad w a bunch of baby girls. :celebrate
I didn't realize that the queen can make up the 1lb difference in less than a week, but I guess it make sense. Supposedly you can't tell a 2# start from a 3# start by 6 weeks out.
Woot! I am a certified bee haver! Time will tell if I'm gonna be a bee keeper.;)
My buddy and I picked up four packages today.. he was hiving 6lbs of bees into a big Warre hive. He asked me if I wanted the extra queen. I said, um... yeah! :weee
So I've got 3-2lb packages installed in TBHs...
I don't know your weather... is the nectar flow coming on? Don't forget they burn 80% of their stores in the last 20% of winter... Also, a cold snap can make the cluster shrink away from the sides, then they can't reach the stores on the side of the box. It would be a shame to get this close and...
The frames are preformed cells that open at the base to let the capped honey out - the bees just fill them and cap as normal, then once you drain them, the bees discover there's no honey behind the cappings, open them up and fill again.
I think more info is forthcoming this week...
What has been your experience with the bees on blueberries? Do they get enough nectar for surplus, or is it mostly used up with expanding brood? Forgive me for getting O/T... :hide
Awesome post, Latestarter. You have been studying! :clap
Everything you said jives with what I've been reading - maybe we're just reading the same stuff!
I'll just add a footnote to this - if you don't want to buy every year (and neither do I!) then you can count on raising your own queens...
That question has lots of angles... If your objective is similar to mine, you just want to get your colony off to a healthy start, with all the reserves they need to make it through the late fall, winter, and early spring. Wax foundation will help them get started. I don't like the idea of...
Oh yeah! I'll be there. :celebrate
I'm sure all of them have loads of info worth listening to. Sam kills me how he goes in a hive with a burning leaf, a turkey feather and a tank top. Sheesh!
Even though I'll have the two Langs as controls, my set up is going to be based on Mangum's approach...
And if I hadn't subscribed to ABJ, I never would have found out about this! :weee
I'm just hoping my package bees aren't due to be picked up that day! :fl
Got my first issue of American Bee Journal today! :celebrate
I've been debating whether or not to get Bee Culture, too... Anybody take either of these?
