I think he states the natural sized bees range farther than the big bees, too.
That could be good thing around here in VA, we can get into a nectar dearth with the July - August droughts.
If I make it through the summer with colonies and no anaphylaxis, I'll be getting his book. You are...
Well, you know me, I haz no experience... :(
But I can say I like the way you're thinking!
Seems to me like the Honey Bees got along just fine for several years before people started messing with them. Natural certainly seems like a low impact approach to working with the ladies.
They build...

The more I read about various interests, the more I realize that many books are like pop songs, they are flashy and have a catchy tune(read lots of pretty pics), but...
Thanks for this! Good stuff and an awesome indicator of a colony in trouble.
One small correction, tho - Worker girls laid the eggs you saw... drones are haploid and male.
Remembering that I have zero experience, from what I have read so far -the large part of the relative calmness of a colony is due to when you open the hive and how you move around when you're in it. That's said, the Italians are generally calm, big time honey producers, and Carnies work well in...
LOL and I'm working my way through about 20 years worth of AMERICAN BEE JOURNAL that my uncle handed down to me... starting from '77. Talk about a time machine! Takes me back to when I was a kid.
Whenever I get into something, I always like to read about it first. And while reading on the 'net is fun and productive (as far as searching goes), it's not as satisfying as curling up by the fire and reading a real book. I look for books written by authors that know their craft or topic, and...
Pshaw - steel your nerves and jump right in! (says the newbie!) ;)
Level your gaze across the table at your DH, and tell him "Come now, we can do this!(don't forget to blink, in the appropriate manner) "It will be a xxxxdisasterxxxx - an adventure! Besides, we can't leave (friend) hanging with...
Ugh... I was afraid that you were gonna say they were in her house! Fears realized. Wow.
Um, ok - this is like you saying you want me to teach you the violin, and you want to play a concerto, and I'm still working on 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' myself!:th
Do you two, (or significant others) have...
Hmmm... an intriguing postulation! Need more input. :caf
And I, beeing a total bee noob, have absolutely no leg to stand on to be offering you advice. But what the heck - here goes nothing!
When you say "uninvited at her house", do you mean IN her house? Like in the the walls uninvited...
You can purchase package bees, or started colonies, or catch a swarm if you're lucky.
If you are really interested in going this year, get in touch with your local beekeepers association asap, they will help you out.

Where the video came from
This guy is from Bowling Green, you can hear the guns at AP Hill hammering in the background of some of the videos.
The bees want to stay with the queen, her pheromones determine where they are drawn to. If they ignore the queen in the cage, there could be a...
Sounds like you'll have a great set up!
Seems like packages around here are available 3-4 wks ahead of nucs, I guess that's because they're shook, with an added queen - instead of a proven queen on frames of capped brood. It will be interesting to see how far along my packages are in the top...
I've already got opinions, but since I don't have any experience... I'll just sit back and wait!
I've got a friend that's starting two hives in the spring, too. He's one county east of me - about 40 miles. Another total bee noob. He's smitten with the Warre hive.
Time will tell!
This is awesome! Congrats on diving in.
What state are you in? Do you know your area's main nectar flow source? Are you starting with packages or nucs?
Soooo many questions!!! :woot
Yeah, if he's flaring his hackles at you this is never going to get any better. Their brains are no bigger than a pea, and run three programs, Fight, peck and scratch, and take care of the ladies. Once he gets in a loop of 'taking care of the ladies = fight you' , it's over.
To me, scalding...
