Hive with no queen; should I combine it or requeen?

Are you familiar with the sound of a queenless hive? Reminds me of a low moan.

Hive with no queen; should I combine it or requeen?

When you inspect, look for open queen cells. If there are none, then hmmmm. Look on the edges of uncapped brood for fresh eggs. (If you have uncapped brood.) No chance you rolled her on an earlier inspection? There is a thing called an usurpation swarm where a softball sized knot of bees and a...

Hive with no queen; should I combine it or requeen?

Just because I hopped in with an answer doesn't make me a very knowledgeable beekeeper. :D =D

Hive with no queen; should I combine it or requeen?

I would guess that your hive swarmed about a week or so ago, and one fiery young lady has been taking care of business with the other unlucky gals that weren't quite as fit. The undertakers dropped her outside, but she still smelled good enough to draw some onlookers. I would put her into a...

    My new hive swarmed

Ponker, steel your heart! :hugs Bees will break it, that's for sure! ...And then your wallet. First things first, are any bees left in your hive? What style is it? Have you had a lot of rain in you location? How many inspections since install? What did you find each time? Did they...

Trying to catch my first swarm

I frequently take walks with my 80yo mother... we always try to get a feel for what the bees are currently working. The hard freezes damaged a lot of our spring blooms. Last night ended a month long drought. Everything is so green today! Hopefully the bees temperament will ameliorate. They had...

Trying to catch my first swarm

#3! The second one I caught was not out of any of my hives... I gave that one to a friend with an empty Warre. This batch came out of another one of my topbars. Those things are great for raising bees! I sat down beside the swarm and just watched it til I saw the boss lady, then scooped her up...

Urgent Question about queen cage orientation

Sure, I'd go right back in and tend to it. If they weren't balling the cage, I'd just go ahead and let her out. Balling the bees are on the cage like velcro and arched, happy attendants are easily brushed aside w your finger.

Trying to catch my first swarm

Last year I accidentally ripped apart two ripe queen cells because they had attached them to two combs. I got wiser this year, and waxed them onto a blank starter strip. The girls took my roughshod work and made it look purty!
