Thanks for the support! Tell me more about the chains, what seems to interest the goats about them? Do you think they would like wind chimes? Are they big ones, rusty ones, do they lick them? I am currently planning a teeter/totter, a small "tire mountain", and some spools, found some big...
Oh well, they look pretty happy and "not bored", so perhaps it is a welcome, though unintended consequence, also a great way to cool them off in the summer! Although maybe they just look like they are happy because that is how pig faces are configured... But a daily bath will keep them clean...
Here are some more, it seems like it is mostly goats that need activity centers... I have sheep, but they do like to play... https://www.wideopenpets.com/10-goat-playgrounds-will-make-kids-jealous/ guess I will hit up Craigslist for some tractor tires, used pallets and those giant spools...
Maybe cattle like to be bored, afterall, if there is nothing to get excited about, nothing bad is happening... I had that attitude when I was working in the hospital... Boredom meant that nothing bad was happening to anyone! Excitement meant that something was... Thanks for the really great...
Let's face it, herds spend a lot of time dealing with boredom, unless they have multiple acreage to roam with cliffs, streams, logs to jump, etc. (what is the first thing we usually do? get rid of that stuff, so we can have a safe, clear pasture). Additionally, activity centers can provide...
Well, this sheepman has had years of experience and he is seeing problems down the road with these sheep of some kind that he doesn't want to deal with, which is why he is willing to give you a deal. But, he has a lot of sheep and doesn't need them. Maybe you post some pics of them? Make sure...
Katahdins are hair sheep and should not have their tails docked at all. It is unnecessary, though I guess some do it, but I always wonder why, as there is no benefit from it, and stress, pain, and potential for prolapse if done too short.
Well, I think I would go for it, but I would be prepared to be keeping feed in front of them 24-7 to try to make up for their poor start in life, especially if they turn out to be pregnant, they are going to need a lot of nutritional support... If they don't get it, things can go bad, toxemia...
My first ram was a big beast, he was most likely a Suffolk/Hampshire cross, Probably weighed 250lbs. I never turned my back on him. When young, he would charge me, but he always acted like a bull, would paw the ground and then run with his head down from a long distance. I would wait til he...
The irony will come when you finally have the perfect, beautiful pasture up and going and discover that the sheep and goats really like the weeds better... Maybe you should leave some of those grapevines and rosebushes or transplant them around the fencelines... They would look pretty there...
Thanks, I have thought about a livestock guardian dog but I really don't know how to train one to be functional without being dangerous to people... And right now, I think my most dangerous sheep predator might be humans... There is some sheep rustling that goes on around here... Since I am...
I don't know if there is a right or wrong way either, but on the way to the introduction page, I thought I was there and wound up posting under some poll about everything you should do before you acquire a herd. By the time I figured out I was writing this in the wrong place, I had written...
Well, you have heard the story of Tuxedo, but not all of the story of Belle... I was searching for a colored American Blackbelly, and answered a Craigslist ad (that's how pretty much all the storys start). But I didn't connect right away, there was some phone tag that went on... I didn't make...
Ok, here are some pics, I am from the central valley of California! Here are pics of Dash in June of 2018, 1 1/2 years old, beautiful Belle with her lambs, Scamper and Dash, Dash is on the left side, April of 2017, last (but not least), Tuxedo at about 4 mos, June of 2016
I bought my "herd" one at a time... It started when I had to put one of my old horses down (I guess I had a herd of horses until then, after that just one). I thought my other old quarter mare would now need something for company and I am in my 60's now and can't outlive another horse, so...
Can't really say I considered all that stuff, so here is how not to do it. I bought my "herd" one at a time... It started when I had to put one of my old horses down (I guess I had a herd of horses until then, after that just one). I thought my other old quarter mare would now need something...
