Only deworm if your parasite load is high. Learn to do FAMACHA and do fecals on animals that are suspect (score 3, 4 and 5). I use a threshold of 1,000 EPG (eggs per gram) when deciding to worm or not to worm. Do not deworm if not needed. Use only 1 deworming medicine until it doesn't work...
Somebody has a recommendation for a good drench gun for sheep? I've read that these $20 ones are junk and break easily. I've heard that some of the better ones have replacement parts you can buy but didn't pay attention to the brand. What is a good one to get?
Aloha Sheepshape. Unfortunately our farm is 100% green pasture with no cement floor I could put him on. I'll keep an eye on him and make sure the pockets are removed so no crud is accumulating inside and keep spraying the 50/50 solution to dry it up and hopefully infection free. Interesting...
So we wrestled him down today to get a good look at his hoof. All 4 of them had the outside walls separated from the middle and creating a pocket all around. I trimmed it as much as I could, scraped the stuff inside then sprayed it with a 50/50 bleach/water solution. The breeder tells me that...
When I checked him the day before his hoof looked fine and I didn't see anything wrong, although he had a slight limp. Yesterday he had his foot up and was limping pretty badly. Today he seemed fine. I'm guessing he must have sprained it while butting heads with the wether. I'll keep an eye...
My ram has a slight limp on his front right foot. I looked at the hoof and it looked fine. It wasn't dirty, there was nothing stuck to it and no hoof rot but I sprayed a 50/50 water/bleach solution just in case. I think he might have sprained it butting heads with the wether. He is still...
Could you please post a picture of your new electric fence set up? I'm trying to learn about these types of electric fences. Thank you!
Btw, I love your dog!
Is there a good reference book for health problems that someone could refer me to? I've heard of Laura Lawson's "Lamb Problems" book. Does anyone have it? What do you think about it?
I've always wondered about aging the meat too. Here in Hawaii is never cold enough to hang meat. Is sheep like chicken where the meat is tough until rigor is done? Guess we might have to plan on getting a small walk in for aging meat...
We like it and it seems to work well. The best thing about it is that it tells you the direction of the short so you can easily locate it. I was told by some local farmers that the lesser cost ones do not last. Definitely worth the investment if you have a lot of electric fencing.
We just finished about 950' of fencing yesterday and I've discovered that if you hold on to one clip and shake it up and down most of the other clips will fall off it, making it easier to grab the one clip you need.
I don't have any sheep (yet) but have done tons of research on it. I too would like a 'milky' breed for personal consumption and cheese making. Everybody knows that goats and the best producers but they are also hard to keep contained, thus, our choice to keep sheep instead. From what I've...
I ended up buying the Gallagher 50905 ($99.99 plus free shipping to Hawaii -- unheard of!) It got good reviews on line and it also works on polywire which is what we are running right now. I'll come back and post a review of the product once I get it in case someone else is in need of one...
Any recommendation on a good, reliable and somewhat affordable brand/model? I've shopped on line and it looks like there are mainly 3: Speedrite, Gallagher and Zareba. They are priced between $99 to $130 with free shipping from ebay and Amazon. We're using on the Premier 1 electric fences...
There are some federal programs that will help you with some fencing expenses if you join their conservation program. They don't give you much, probably pay for material plus a little bit of labor costs (better than nothing!). We just signed up with a county program here in Hawaii where...
