I'm in Nova Scotia, the test was done at the Vet college, just spoke to the vet's office and they will try to get the titer level for me. Am waiting on results of CAE test, all were negative for Johnes. Thinking I should have the rest of the herd done. Am I understanding correctly that CL can...
Thanks Southern, I will have to ask the vet about the "titer" level? She didn't mention anything at all about that. The doe is about 6, her buck that I still have is 8 months old, so I will have him tested as well. These are registered Nigerian Dwarf goats. Two other does from my herd tested...
Hi all, I've just had a doe test positive for CL, what now? She has no lumps or bumps that I can find on her, I've had her for a few years now and never seen anything suspicious. I had her tested at the prospective buyer's request because I was going to sell her, I suspect now she will be...
Definitely empty your pail into another container between does. I use a mason jar. Also, I started out milking them by hand, but now use a small milker thing, it's still manual, but once you get the cup on the teat and pump the hand pump the does seem to settle more than when I was constantly...
The scurs usually start to grow after the scab has dropped off, and that takes several weeks, at least mine do. Sometimes the scurs grow quite big, and will curl, other times they are just little nubs of horn. They are not as strong, and often with head butting they get knocked off, causing...
Hi all, hope someone has some ideas. This is about the third of triplets that had to come in to be a bottle baby when her mom wouldn't feed her. I fed her colostrum that I milked from her mom then gradually moved her from goat milk over to whole milk because she was sold as a bottle baby and...
Well, she is definitely a bottle baby. No way was her mom taking her, won't even let her snuggle with the other two, so she's in the house for now. Drinking from the bottle with no proble m and quite likes to be up with me. And she is adorable of course.
Ivy delivered like a champ last night, three in about 5 seconds, the third and smallest was kind of left out of the licking session, didn't seem to be warming up and was pretty lethargic. Tried several times to put her in front of mom but no go, so I bundled her up, milked out a bit of...
As far as sweaters, just cut the sleeves off an old sweatshirt, and then cut holes for the front legs. Cut in a U shape for bucklings so they can pee without getting it wet. Works great, the cuff of the sleeve is like a turtleneck for them. I have a heat lamp hung, but I think you'll be fine...
Oh, I am so interested in seeing what you come up with, I have just been thinking about doing this with my goats so my grandson can "drive" them. Please post what you find. Thanks.
I have Nigerian Dwarf does and have no trouble milking them. I do it both by hand and with a little vacuum pump thing. One doe hates being milked by hand but stands just fine for the other. The more you milk, the bigger the teats get it seems to me.
My ND buck had a "date" today, and I'm just curious, in the space of an hour or so with a receptive doe, how many times would be the norm for him to "do it"?
My pygmy wether does the rearing up thing, or did when he first got here, he doesn't try it with me any more because I either smack his nose or flick his ear if he does. I wouldn't let them get away with it at all, it isn't "playing", it's asserting. It may stop as she gets used to you and her...
I recently had the same thing with a set of twin bucklings, one had an undescended testicle, and unfortunately, did not make it through the surgery to wether him. Vet has no idea why. The other buckling is just fine.
I've offered her another scenario as well, and I hope she takes me up on it. I have a five week old doeling who is just so cute, and everyone who has seen her wants to know if she is for sale. I had decided to keep her and breed her to my Mini Silky buck but have now offered to give her to...
Sad update to this story, just heard today that he didn't make it through the surgery. Vet has no idea why as he was healthy. When my does kid, I will offer first pick to this buyer. I hate it when this kind of thing happens. :-(
Well, I made the offer and she has decided to keep the little guy, as they are already in love with him, and won't take anything from me toward his vet fees. She wants a doeling and so if I get one from the next kiddings coming up she hopes we can do a "deal"... which of course we will so it...
Thanks Jodie, this is pretty much what I had been thinking. I am not a big breeder as such, just want to milk a few does and can't keep all the kids, so sell them on. Replacement is a bit hard just now, the only other buckling I have is a registered one, but I have offered him to her at a...
Hi all, just looking for some advice here. A buckling that I just sold has turned out to have an undescended testicle. The vet has told the new owner that he should not be bred as he will pass this along. To wether him is going to cost her a fair bit of cash as it is more complicated to do...
