Make sure they are actually on the bottle when you get them. If they have been nursing their mother and the plan is to switch them to a bottle, that can be very difficult to do.
As long as they have a full belly and a dry place out of the wind, they will be fine in the winter.
When we had the two steers we were feeding out, T-Bone and Ribeye, they got out one night and I got them to follow me home about a half mile by shaking a bucket of grain in front of them.
This guys is pretty well fed, so he's not as treat motivated.
So, the weigh in for the 4H Show and Sale was yesterday.
Drake weighed in at 840 lbs.
He actually, handles pretty good at this point. Maurine said there were some wild ones at the weigh in. He didn't really want to go in the scale enclosure.
I mentioned on another thread that I had a doe who milked through this year and was grand champion at the N.C. State Fair in her 14th month of lactation.
One Fine Acre Salt and Pepper. She appraised 91 EEEE this spring and appraiser said he wouldn't change a thing about her udder. In fact...
When we milk test, we test for 305 days. Most of ours are producing around 1100 lbs in 305 days, that's what we look for.
We typically breed ours every year, but we have some that could be milked through.
We had a doe who was grand champion at this years N.C. State fair in Oct 2021 and the...
Here he is. He is supposed to be halter broken, but I would say he was about "semi-halter broken". He certianly isn't wild. I brushed him before I took this picture. And, you can take the halter and turn him and get him to sorta go where you want to. But, he needs more work. We are keeping...
Rachel's steer came from Turner Shorthorns. There are videos at this link.

Rachel's is #71. The video was taken this summer. He was supposed to have weighed 750 lbs last week. The weigh in for the 4H Spring 2022 show and sale is Monday. I'll post...
Quality nigerians don't have shorter lactations. They also don't have tiny teats. While they will not produce as much milk as a quality standard sized goat, good ones can produce a half gallon today.
Buy quality animals from a herd that can produce milk records.
I'm a little late to this party, but I can tell you that coastal bermuda hay is an excellent hay for goats. I've been breeding, raising, milking and showing Nigerian Dwarfs for about 12 years now, and it is our primary hay.
They aren't pure short horn, they are some percentage of Angus. 5/8 Shorthorn and 3/8 Angus (I think).
This farm in Ohio kind of specializes in breeding show steers for 4H etc. He said the reason this guy was still available was because he was black. Well, blackish I would say. Folks up...
@farmerjan She's "showing" the cattle, but I don't know if you could say they are "show" cattle ;)
The first pictures are at the 4H show and sale. Maurine still manages a farmers market and a lady who is a vendor has cattle. Her 9 year old grand daughter was showing and they asked Rachel to...
@farmerjan
I hate to hear about @Baymule losing her husband. I'm so very sorry for your loss.
My wife Maurine lost her daddy last week. He was 92.
On a good note, I see at the top of this page I was a 1 year non smoker. I'm now a 3 year non smoker as of Sept 2nd.
farmerjan, my 100lb dynamo...
