Ok, makes sense. So I think what I'll do is let them be with her until the evening milking, (8pm) milk her out, then take them inside. If she's not letting down for me in the morning, I'll take them back out, and hopefully we'll get to the point where she'll let down without the kids present. Is...
Thanks! They're dried off and nursing, I guess I'll do it now. I have plenty of cow colostrum, and I'll milk her soon if I can coax her up on the stand.
She is super devoted to them, she might not take it well if I take them away from her. Is there anything I can do to minimize her distress?
As a side note, those of you who pull to bottle feed, when should I do it? I'm thinking about pulling and selling them as bottle babies at a week or two old. The last time I tried to sell weaned bucklings, I didn't🫠
Annie kidded two healthy babies! She and my buck must have been carrying black, because both kids are black and white. And both BUCKS. Annie, that is not what I ordered!
But I'm thankful they arrived safely! Aren't they precious?
Thanks!
Yup, I'm grateful for that! 😅 And I hand bred her, so no chance of a different due date. (I think that's what you call it when you just put her in for a few supervised minutes, then take the buck away?)
Annie is due tomorrow! I can hardly wait, though she'll probably hold them in for another five days just to spite me😜 I did my first pre-kidding shave this morning! She was NOT happy, but I think I did ok despite the kicking.
She has some udder fill, I'm pretty sure she's got colostrum in there...
Thank you!! 😊 I'm falling in love with her already. She has such a sweet personality.
Thanks! It's a really old pole barn that some of the previous owners used for pigs. As a result, the ground inside was a MESS, so my dad and a friend leveled it out with a lot of hard work. It's about 20x32...
Introducing our newest goat herd member!!!
Meet Avon! Avon is the sweetest, calmest little goat. Not a peep on the 3 hour car ride home, and she is so pretty. Her dam is a 3*M doe, and her sire is a *B buck, so I'm super excited about what she is bringing into my herd! She'll be bred to Huck in...
I have a funny goat story to tell!
We tie each goat to a short lead at milking time, letting each one off to eat on the stand when it's their turn. When I sold the herd queen/tamest goat a week ago, it disrupted that delicate balance. The other two more skittish goats were not happy and it took...
I have lots of farm news to catch up with. We've been very busy! We sold our ram to a nice family down the road who had 2 ewes. Now we don't have to feed him any more, and we're all set to get our first registered ram this summer! Hopefully he'll be able to get them bred, they were 2 years old...
Sounds like you've got things under control so far and knew what you're looking for! Most likely you'll wake up one morning to some healthy kids. Do you have any basic kidding supplies on hand?
Keep us updated! There are many other awesome goat and sheep owners on here that I've learned a ton...
Also, if you can, try to feel on either side of the base of her tail. There are ligaments on each side that feel like pencils normally, then soften when she gets close to birth. When they are very soft and almost gone, she should kid in 12-24 hours. Her belly will hollow out and the kids will...
