We have witnessed a miracle on our little farm the past few days. Oreo, our Nubian who lost premature triplets a month ago, has found herself a baby! I had purchased a week old, exclusively bottle fed buckling off of Craigslist a week ago. We were keeping him separated from everyone else, as he...
I second and third the caution about using your domestic well to water that much property. We live on 2 acres and only use the domestic well for household needs and watering animals in the winter months. The rest of the time, we use a sandpoint well (shallow well), to water our pastures, yards...
Great info about honey, baymule. I agree wholeheartedly with the rest as well. We had one get stepped on and while she lived for many weeks past the injury, she could not keep up calorie wise. During the first hard cold snap, she died. I wish we had put her down, but she had such a will to...
My husband says that with humans, you have a 6 hour window for getting stitches. If your piglet is past that, the am n may not be viable for stitching. Sorry.
I will ask my husband when he gets home. He is a nurse practitioner ( for humans) and has lots of stitching experience. It might be too late to stitch it anyways.
Do you have suture material and needles? I really don't know how you would manage that on your own unless you have prior suturing experience. Maybe someone else can chime in here.
I drew a picture of our set up. This set up is under a roof until just past the apex of the triangle. We would lock mama pig up at night (see gate on crate) . once the babies are big and fast enough to get away from those big heavy mama feet, we tie the gate of the crate open.
I would try to figure out a crate type situation then. These huge sows aren't very graceful or coordinated and can easily damage their litter.
We put the feed trough at the far end of our crate. That way she had to get in it to eat. She also could get out of it so she wasn't stuck in there for...
What are you feeding mama pig? Our sow was very unsettled and aggressive toward her babies the day after she farrowed. Turns out she was starving! Birthing and feeding a dozen babies is a lot of work. We made sure to increase her feed dramatically, and she settled down and turned into a great...
I haven't raised ndgs, we have primarily Nubians. That said, I will share what we have learned.
1- 'free ranging' your goats, while cute and often fun, teaches them some very naughty habits. We free ranged four does and a buck one winter. when it was time for a garden we had a terrible fight on...
We have gotten a fair amount done this week on our fencing project. At least we did until the weather turned crazy. Ice cold 30mph winds from Tuesday on. Grr. Usually I love all weather, but not when I have an agenda. Woke up to snow, but no wind this morning. We can work in snow. Oh, and there...
I am completely and utterly addicted to goats. In fact, I've just made arrangements to purchase my new buck so I can have better eye candy kids! I found a week old, colostrum fed bottle baby (red nubian buckling) out of a tested herd for $50! I get him tomorrow. Happy birthday to me!
