The best I have gotten at the county fair was a Reserve Grand in my Havana breed. I've made it to state fair with rabbit as well, but that was 4(ish?) years ago. At open shows I've gotten BOV, BOSV, and BOSB (mostly just at local ones, not a whole lot of competition but enough for a leg). At...
Can you be a bit more specific? I went back through that thread and I'm still not quite sure what you mean?
Also, what is 4-H like in Colorado? (I ask because I had a friend visit the Texas State Fair a few years back and barely anyone there seemed to know about showing (animals, general...
Sorry it's been awhile.
I do have pictures to help make up for it. :)
As for the doe with the eye problem, it's clearing up very well. Her sister is looking a lot better than her at this point, so she'll probably be going anyways.
No, the premies did not make it. They were too underdeveloped...
Okay, update time. Finals are in less than 4 days and I need to de-stress (at 1:30 in the morning :idunno).
So, my Champagne d'Argent I found was pregnant! I knew she was getting fatter, and I didn't think I was feeding her more. Sadly, she had them (only two) before they were fully developed...
Well, this post is unfortunately about the sad side of rabbit raising. :(
Last night after I got home from school (around 10pm) I went out to check the babies. All seemed well until I counted them and one was missing-one of the broken blacks. I looked everywhere and could not for the life of me...
The parents look to be a broken black/broken magpie (the doe/mom) and maybe a broken lynx (buck/dad) based on your description and how it looks. I'd need closer pics to be able to tell better.
Going from left to right:
Charlie Tri-color? (charlie for sure, questionable tri-color); charlie or...
I do not own dutch, and the people I know that do, as far as I know, only breed for show. No clue if they use them for meat. But I know that you can. People mainly will use their unshowables or less desirables for meat only keeping the best of the litter back for breeding.
I honestly recommend...
Congratulations! Just keep an eye on them and they should do fine. I'm sure she will be an awesome mom; rabbits are meant to be quite prolific, they wouldn't get anywhere if they were bad moms.
You'll see they grow up so fast.
Rabbits generally have kits on day 31, so you have a just a touch longer to wait. Sometimes they'll go longer though (I've had a doe finally kindle on day 36). You just have to keep an eye on her.
2 more signs you can look for:
1) If the doe is bagging up (starting to produce milk). BUT, with...
@Bunnylady @mikiz
mikiz is correct, I did mean that the pedigree is black heavy. As a zoology student, I have a working knowledge of genetics and how they are passed, so I understand that genes can't be 'very dominant'. Thank you for the information though.
Also, I wasn't so much asking if...
Another update, mostly just to rant about kits because they do 2 things that drive me insane.
1) Switching gender on me (sex them one day, a week later they've all swapped to the other one).
2) My rant is about their color. My blues, which I'm still convinced they're blue based on their skin...
Thanks everyone. A quick update on the litter. Something odd but really cool has happened. Today I discovered that there is at least one blue kit in the litter! It's really cool because now it won't take me two generations to get more blues. You can actually see one in my first pic; there is a...
If your county's 4-H is like my county's 4-H, then any rabbit you show must have a permanent tattoo in the left ear. You need to know the breed, age (for us birth date and what class (senior, junior, intermediate)), gender, and variety (color).
As for ARBA, they need the above information as...
Thank you mikiz for the information.
So, for some updates. Out of the 10 kits that survived after the growing fur (all 10 made it to 4 months), I retained 3. 1 black buck, 1 chocolate buck, and 1 doe. Not sure who the better buck is, and not sure which chocolate I want to keep. So I'm letting...
Technically you can touch it up with whatever you want to use! You'll just have to make sure that when you fix it you don't mess up what is legible. So probably take what came off and only clamp those letters/numbers in.
EX: One of my rabbit's tattoo is CQQ39. If the 39 came off/disappeared and...
What you probably felt was fecal pellets; babies have never felt hard like rocks to me when palpating. And at 21 days they should start feeling more like a kit than just an embryo. So you should be able to feel the head, body and limbs of each individual fetus.
How much weight is she losing and...
I don't know if you're show is done or not (assuming it is by the amount of time that has passed), but I will answer this anyways so that you and other members can look back to this or pass on the information.
What you really need is the correct rabbits and the correct tattoos in the rabbits'...
I've never personally had experience with zebras nor any crosses of them, but I can summarize what I have heard and read.
Because zebras have, for thousands of years, been a purely wild animal and never been close to domesticated, they are hard-wired to stick with only their species (and a...
