A little bit of lambing education for the newbies or the unaware. You see those little worm-like cords? That means the ewe is done, no more babies.

Lambing Season 2024 has begun! Idalee had a single girl at 1100. She’s a good size baby at 11.8lbs. Idalee lambed on her due date.

They are only part hair breed so they may need to be sheared.

I got everyone de-liced and CDT’d last Thursday. They will get a second de-licing next Thursday. I picked up a new bottle of BoSe from the vet today. All lambs will get a dose at birth. One of our local feed stores does custom mixes. I’ve got them making a 16% feed with deccox. It’s got some...

147 days is the average gestation. Do you have an actual bred date on her?

This is a classic case of “a watched pot never boils”. Ewes stretch and fart and act strangely all the time. After 20+ years with sheep, I can usually look at someone in my flock and tell that they are going to lamb within the next 24hrs. I can’t do it as well on my sister’s flock next door...

2024 SageHill Lambing (the newbie joins in) now Fall 2024

Coccidia is everywhere. You already have it on your property. Healthy adults are fairly immune to it, but it can be hard on lambs and sickly animals. Feeding off the ground/away from poopy feet helps a lot, but medicated grain is the biggest help. The grain I feed during lambing and then to...

Xena 💕 You can tell she’s P-Ewe’s daughter. Lise, she was the last lamb born in 2023. The late lambs often don’t grow out as nicely as the older lambs, but Lise looks great. She’s as big as everyone else. The 3 Amigos - Lisle, Frieda, and Addie “Excuse me, ma’am. This one is empty!” -...

Border Leicester is a long or coarse wool breed, but this fleece is surprisingly soft. It helps that it’s a lamb/yearling fleece. It will most likely be harsher next year.

1st lambs are due on the 21st and 28th. My crossbred ewe, Ida, is due first and then a Shetland, Fiona. Fiona had my 2 girls (the little hussy sisters) last year so I’m excited for her lambs this year. Of course she’ll probably have boys this year. 🤣 I’m late on doing CD&T shots this year. I’ll...

I sheared 18 sheep this weekend. I’ve got 2 rams and 4 retired ewes left to do, but they aren’t a priority. I’m really happy with my yearling Border Leicester ewes, both the whites and blacks. They’re all built really nicely and have gorgeous fleeces. I was debating selling 2-3 of them, but...

I use electrics. I only have a couple Shetlands that naturally roo (shed). The Border Leicesters have to be sheared.

Yes, the Qflex 1.5 from Premier1. I get blank tags and write the lambs name on the tag. My sister bought a laser printer last year so now I can custom print directly on the tags so they don’t fade out like the marker does.

I use the 1.5 size on the lambs. They get their name tag when they’re fresh and little. They get their scrapie tag when they’re older. My numbering system is based on the year (this year starts with 24) so I don’t like ordering scrapie tags until I know how many I need.

Today is my birthday so I took the day off and spent a few hours shearing. I did all of the bred/supposed to be bred ewes except for 1 Border Leicester and the Shetland ewes who were sheared last fall. I also sheared Xena and Little Lizzie. Xena is so pretty underneath her wool! Her fleece is...

The black and brown all blend together when it gets carded. I’ll try to remember to take pictures when I process the fleece.

Xena is my favorite Border Leicester lamb from last spring. She’s just a nice little sheep. I looked at her fleece a few days ago and told her I needed to get her sheared so I could play with her wool and 2 days later I came out to find her walking around looking like a haystack. 🤦🏼‍♀️...
