    New Zealand buck breeding/behaviour issues

You’ve got to be careful because bucks can easily breeds through wire. I’ve also had a sassy doe grab a lop’s ear through the wire and hold him there for a minute. She didn’t draw blood, and it was because he was trying to attack the other rabbits through the bars, but after that he never tried...

Can goats and mini horses breed?

It won’t work, they can physically breed but nothing will come out of it. They are different kinds of animals, which never have and never will be able to inter mix without scientists doing serious genetic reconstruction. Which they’ve tried and never been able to do up to date.

    Rhinelander Buck Behavior

How old is everybody? Rabbits often hate each other and try to kill each other. Is it possible the other two “bucks” are just females who are too young to breed yet? Welcome to rabbit breeding by the way!

    Messybun’s Small starts big dreams

Well, I’m on the east coast (America) and a little less than 2 acres. Right now it is a hobby farm and I’m hoping to get some more useful animals; our current ones are all pets. I tend to have grand ideas, over research them and then decide whether to do them or not. As far as sheep if I find...

    New Kid

We had trouble with our goats like that too. Make sure everyone has their own shelter so that they don’t have to *gasp* share. If he’s a small goat you can get a Velcro dog jacket to put on him for the really cold nights. Just be careful because a coat can make him not build up his own cold...

Official BYH Poll: What Animals Do You Have In Your Backyard Herd?

I’ve personally expiremented with the best fowl to hold discussions. I’ve found that chickens just respond with “whaat” and that can be frustrating the third time you have to explain. I’ve also found ducks like to sass back at everything you say. Thank you for saving me time on turkeys. 🤣

    Messybun’s Small starts big dreams

Wow, I just surprised myself with that title, it sounds epic. This journal probably isn’t going to be. Right now there are goats, chickens, ducks, geese, a rabbit, and two dogs. I know I’m missing some things in here, but the important part is they aren’t forgotten at feeding time. Why am I...

Official BYH Poll: What Animals Do You Have In Your Backyard Herd?

Good on you, keep repeating the mantra... I do not need turkeys, I don’t think I need turkeys, I don’t neeed turkeys, well they don’t gobble too loudly.

Rabbit mix with Angora and Lionhead, but looks like a Rex

By any chance is the coat curly? I can’t tell from the pictures. I personally had a two pure lionheads produce a super fluff(super technical over here lol) who could have almost passed for an angora if he wanted to, and a sleek, astrex coat, both from the same litter. Astrex coats are my...

    What's the difference between...?

Hello there. Or should I say hello hare? When it comes to raising rabbits vs. hares there is a ton of difference. Hares are WAY more jumpy and likely to have heart attacks they’re leaner meaner and far less domesticated. I’ve honestly not heard of general people breeding hares. They are just not...

    Goat fencing?

I’ve 4ft fences, we started with gradiated wire, smaller at the bottom and bigger at the top, we had to redo everything because the goats would get stuck in the fence and then I’d have to cut the fence and then the chickens could escape and then the goats got their head stuck again and it was...

    Goat eye problem.

I used colloidal silver, this guy has gotten eye infections a few times before(I think it’s the floppy ears) and it usually wipes it out in a day or two. I do not have tetramyacine opthalmic ointment, would triple anti-biotic work the same? I know it works for chicken eye infections. I didn’t...

Will wood chips work in place of hay for a kindling nest for kits etc?

The bottom of my nesting boxes was a small wire, so we used a thin layer of wood shavings and hay over that. You can do your own research of which shavings to use for rabbits, there’s a lot of information already out there.

I am looking into sheep and have questions.

With all livestock there are some who were naturally parasite resistant, and people took that strain of animals and made it into a breed. Sometimes parasite resistance depends on individual animals though. Yes, there are some nasty things that can practically be transferred through milk, that is...

    Goat eye problem.

I noticed one of my goats was squinting tonight, and he was really touchy about his left eye. I suspect it is an injury, but what concerned me is after I put the eye drops in he had whitish tears come rolling down his face every so often. But the eye drops are clear, and I don’t think I got as...

Help from insightful seasoned goat handler

I’m a bit late to the party, but hello. I’ve seen this happen with a sheep before. We stopped cutting and cut closer to the tip. Tons of qwik stop on the bleeding part as well. The ram was fine. If you are doing stuff alone think about learning how to “hobble” your goats. It is nothing like it...
