Antihistamines for a 1yo steer with allergies?

He is growing fine, he comes to eat when I call him, he still eats faster than the other steer. Primary symptoms: he wheezes and sometimes has mucus coming out his nose. I know drooling is normal but up to this guy, I'd never seen a steer allow his nose to get gross & not clean it with his...

Antihistamines for a 1yo steer with allergies?

If my steer with runny nose and wheezing simply has allergies, could I give him Zyrtec or Benadryl?

    1yo calf with runny nose

We're in central NC having a very cool and damp spring. No new animals. He's just my first steer that I've seen to allow mucous to run down his nose and not clean it up. Saw clumps of it in trough. No coughing--yay. Eating normally. What prep are you taking with respect to new vet/Rx laws?

    1yo calf with runny nose

The store was out of penicillin, prob because people are stocking up right now. I hate using drugs on our beautiful beefs, but when u need them, I'm glad for them. I've learned now that I cannot give a 1yo steer shots. Whew. Crazy for trying! I may have used up 2 months of adrenaline attempting...

    1yo calf with runny nose

I see. Yes, spring is a super busy season for outdoor/animal people! Makes great sense. And yes, I'm glad no one offered poor advice. I don't have a large animal vet. Probably would call our prior horse vet if something horrible came up. We've been raising 2 beefs at a time for 6 years and...

    1yo calf with runny nose

Whew. I didn't realize this whole site seems nearly dead. I'm figuring it out on my own. I guess the 68 people who viewed my post didn't know either.

    1yo calf with runny nose

He's had a snotty nose for about a week; I've been waiting to see if it'll clear up. Got Tylan today and tried an injection while he was eating--yikes! Kinda dangerous. Can I administer Tylan in his feed? Will he not eat his grain if it tastes like medicine? Other suggestions?

How to choose grain for my Angus beefs

I've been raising 2 steers per year for 6 years now but my grain supplier is getting too expensive. I'm researching other grain/feed options locally. What matters to you when choosing a grain? I give them 1/2 scoop each twice per day just to see them up close and help them get a bit tame. My...

    Killing fire ants in pasture

Is that borax mixed with sugar or straight borax or an actual product called boraxo?

    Killing fire ants in pasture

I have two empty pastures right now. I'd like to work on the quality of what's growing there while they're empty. On assessing, I found 20+ large fire ant hills. Question #1: what is best method to kill the ants? Question #2: if I use Amdro, how long would I need to wait before putting grazing...

    Question about 4mo steer behavior

We got them around 8-10 weeks after weaning, and they've been on pasture here since then. They have a scoop of 14% cattle utility feed 2x/day as well as access to a salt block.

    Question about 4mo steer behavior

I have 2 steer calves in the pasture, one a good bit stronger than the other although they were born 2 days apart. The smaller one tries to suckle on the bigger one's urine and best I can tell, he lets him do it. Do I let them work that out or should I separate them for a while? Is it just a...

How to manage run-in stall for our steer calves?

I just removed a zillion wheelbarrow loads of wet muck and nasty straw from their stall. The floor is now hard-packed dirt. We have the calves' feed bins in there, so they come in and flood the place with their pee. The hard floor isn't level; it's dipped in the middle, so there's a nasty pool...

Our 10wk steers have the runs--oh, no!

We have them up to 1# grain twice per day with a scoop of probiotic powder added. They gobble it up! This is the 16% grain. Is that the % you use?

Our 10wk steers have the runs--oh, no!

We got this feed at the local mill. It's in an unlabeled bag with a tiny handwritten tag that says "16% calf" on it. Since we're giving them only a very small amount right now, it's not a huge percentage of their diet and therefore the % protein isn't that big of a deal. They're mostly eating...

Our 10wk steers have the runs--oh, no!

They're looking healthy now! The vet came & treated them for pneumonia and scours. I've learned how to give them shots of antibiotics and B12. They're acting much more active--out in the pasture gobbling up grass. We're slowly starting back on 16% calf grain with probiotics added. When they see...

Thanks, guys. Putting a call to vet in the morning.

Our 10wk steers have the runs--oh, no!

I don't know if their current grain is considered "hot" or not. It's a mix of 10% protein (general cattle feed) and a bag of 16% protein (goat feed).

Our 10wk steers have the runs--oh, no!

Here's the scoop from this morning: I didn't give them ReSorb this morning b/c they'd had the 2 days, 2x/day dose that I was told to do. They were clamoring for their bottles. I gave them their 2qts of grain & watched them spurt while they ate. (Sorry to be gross.) And my daughter said that...
