    Pen G, Tylans? Sick goat.

I gave Pen G IM for years on the advice of my vet, before I read on message boards that you 'shouldn't' or 'can't'....So I still give it IM. This is another of those, "Ask 20 different goat producers how they do something and you'll get 20 answers." things. I still think the best course for...

    Pen G, Tylans? Sick goat.

Length of treatment depends on what the problem is...small wound? 7 days...a really deep wound that takes a long time to heal, I'd do 14 days. Rough kidding - 7 days Retained placenta - 10-14 days (depending on what the doe's drainage looks like). I also give Probios any time someone's on...

    Pen G, Tylans? Sick goat.

I use Pen G (Penicillin Procaine G) at 1cc per 20#, every 12 hrs. I use it mainly when there is an injury / wound or for 'girl trouble' - rough kidding, retained placenta, etc. It's also the 'go to' for tetanus and listeriosis, along w/ B vitamin. I've never used Tylan, sorry. I keep...

Horns vs. No horns. What do you like best?

I'm a goat snob. I admit it. (Some may dislike my next comment, but I truly mean no offense...) When I see dairy goats with horns, I think the same thing as I do when I see human children w/ dirty clothes and snotty noses-- Just a general feeling of distaste. It's not the goat's fault any...

    Swollen Feet

I've only had one doe w/ swollen feet, and she had toxemia...ended up having to treat her. I would get a test ran to see if she's getting toxemia, and keep propylene glycol on hand. Good luck!

Moving from emergencies forum; doe gave birth a month early to twins.

You have to remember that part of the 42 views, maybe most, are from other newbies who just don't know what to tell you to do. Please take this as the encouragement it's meant to be -- When the going gets tough, the tough get going. You have to A) get that doe on the stand and milk her, or...

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost a big single buck kid tonight. It stinks.

How do you choose the "best" from babies?

After time and experience, you can get a better idea of which kids will be good and which will be great. W/ buck kids, I like a big 'bucky' looking head, good size, topline, length, strong legs, etc. I will NOT keep a 1st freshener's kid as a buck (in dairy animals), because I want a couple...

    Missed Bottle Feeding consequences?

He'll be fine. Mad and hungry, but fine. Don't double up or anything. We went out of town yesterday and were 2 hrs late feeding our kids. I could hear them screaming when we pulled in the driveway. :hide

Di-Methox packet mixing and schedule dosage for babies?

If you KNOW you have a cocci issue, then yes, start somewhere between 21-30 days of age. We know we do here, so we just treat all kids starting at around 21 days of age.

Di-Methox packet mixing and schedule dosage for babies?

I mix the packet w/ 1.5c of water (warm water, mix well)....keep in the fridge....1cc per 5# day 1, 1cc per 10 # days 2-5 for prevention. Repeat every 21 - 30 days. If they HAVE it, treat (same dosage) for 10-14 days, then repeat in 21. Pearce Pastures, I believe worked up a real scientific /...

New does - sick or just adjusting?

Neither temp worries me, but they need to eat / drink. Are you offering the same feed / hay they are used to? How far away did they come....was the water hard or soft where they were. I've moved a lot of goats and never had one that wouldn't eat after a few hours.

    When you sell registerable goats...

But *if* the new owners decide they aren't going to transfer them....ever...for whatever reason....then the money you spent registering that animal is wasted.

    When you sell registerable goats...

I stopped paying to register goats because a good half of the people who buy them from me, never do anything at all w/ the paperwork. I have 6 goats still under my name w/ ADGA that I sold over the years that nobody ever bothered to transfer. Probably that many boers as well. I dunno how...

Post lungworm lack of weight poor coat

What breed? I took some rescue goats in and really pumped alfalfa (not pellets, the real stuff) and 1/2 c. calf manna 2x a day to them. They improved pretty quickly, you could tell a big difference in 2 weeks and they improved a lot by 1 month.
