Thanks Redbrush! The new little lamb did great her first night and is now just over 48 hours old. Today she started doing a lot of the cute little hopping and skipping and bucking - I can stand and watch for a long, long time :)
That makes complete sense - thank you! Do you think the bonding with each other is because they've been together from birth on? In other words, if you got two 10-week-old puppies from different sources, do you think the result would be different? Or is it better to get them a few months apart?
Wow….what a read. Thanks SBC for the detail. I am curious why only pups 1,2 & 3 are referenced throughout. I thought the opening post said there were 6?
Thanks Bonbean and Alsea! My lamb is from a full Dorset mother (wool) and mixed breed ram who appears to have some hair sheep in him. I'd love it if she leaned more towards being a hair sheep than a wool but there are no guarantees. I'd also love to not have to dock, since I do tend towards a...
@Parsnip I noticed your sheep tails are not docked and I've never seen that before. Would you mind detailing why you made that choice and whether you would make it again? I need to make a quick decision on whether or not to dock the tails on my own lambs so I'd like to hear all points of view...
I don't keep pigs but do feed my old eggs to the chickens and dogs. I don't do anything other than crack them open into a bowl. And that's only because I want to save the shells to feed back to the chickens later.
Good post Greybeard. You make a good point about our home processing not meeting the rigorous standards required of commercial processors. I personally abide by the theory that we need exposure to bugs in order to develop resistance/immunity to them.
When my daughter was a baby, she crawled...
Thanks to SBC and babsbag for the reality check :)
I looked into llamas but I'm not sure they're for me.
I'm still thinking on LGD's and reading all I can about the various breeds, training etc. Last night a ewe surprised me by delivering this:
I mean, I knew it was going to happen...
Loving the pics - especially the part about where the snow is not here ;). We still have 6-8" on the ground from last week, but today is supposed to be in the 40's and tomorrow and through the weekend the 50's so I'm hoping most of it will melt away. I had never seen snow until I was an adult...
Oh, I wouldn't say that. One afternoon shortly after my boer buck and doe arrived on my property, I let them out of their original small enclosure, to graze the 7-acre pasture for the first time. A little while later when I went out to tend the chickens, I heard the doe calling. At first I...
Thanks for that link. I went out determined to examine the hooves of every sheep and goat out there but discovered my first ewe had delivered her first lamb and thoughts of hooves flew out the window. I will check tomorrow….
No name….I am open to suggestions. I am terrible at naming my animals and the ones who have names, its only because they came with them.
I really enjoyed your thread, Parsnip! I only started reading it recently when I joined and by then your lambs were already a week or so old so I didn't...
Pioneer Chicken - I love those little spots myself and they are a bit of a surprise. Mum is all white except for a few peach-colored spots on her head. Dad is white with brown face and legs. I guess the brown spots come more from him than her.
Oh I forgot - I also took a picture of her lying...
This morning while they ate their grain, I inspected the nether regions of my 3 ewes and was stunned to find the bags of two of them filling up. They don't look that pregnant yet and I was thinking we are still a month out (the ram runs with them all the time so due dates are a mystery). I...
Nah, not really - it is to do with raising the new buckling, right? Besides, I always just hit "recent posts" so everything that was posted since my last visit comes up anyway, and I never even notice what category they're in :)
I'm curious though. You said the hooves were overgrown but he is...
@Southern by choice, thank you SO much for your detailed and well-thought out reply.
My "job" is to run our small farm so while my attention is divided between kids, and responsibilities to friends and family, I am here most of the time and in that sense, have the time to devote to training...
I did consider llamas and donkeys right after the coyote attack. You're right - thinking back on what I wrote, they probably make more sense since they eat the same food. I was put off both by the thought of transport (I don't have a trailer) and hoof care. I keep horses though and do already...
