Teresa & Mike CHS - Our journal

JUST experienced this recently with one of our first years....she had been shy and we could never get a hand on her, until not long ago when she finally got a peanut butter dog biscuit, snatched out of the mob. It was like a light went on in her head! She started getting more friendly...

Tell me about your farm workhorses...ATVs, 4 wheelers, tractors, side by sides, etc.

That's so good to hear! We don't know much about tractors, so don't really know what to expect or what is normal and what is not with this tractor. It is the most quiet tractor we've ever been around, which was a surprise, considering its age.

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

A pic of this new paddock that I moved the sheep to late last evening....just one night and a morning in there and you can see how much eating and trampling has gone on! We like them to stay in there at least 4-6 days...the last few paddocks have been only 4 days due to the size but this one...

    Fleas!!

I agree! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Treating the lawn with sweet lime when you know you'll have a few dry days helps to eliminate fleas and their eggs in areas where dogs lounge the most. Then, stay on top of them on the dog's body....I've found that placing ACV in...

    Fleas!!

Years ago I stopped using the drop on flea meds when I noticed my dogs HATED them and would do anything to get away from me when I applied them, their skin would actually flinch when it was applied....and these are dogs that loved any and all attention and had never tried to avoid my applying...

    Fleas!!

Makes you wonder how toxic it is to the dog, doesn't it? So toxic it kills the bugs and lingers in the dog's system for a long time. Sounds a little scary.

    Fleas!!

I spread sweet lime in the yard, concentrating where the dogs lounge the most, in early spring and early fall. It really works! Found that out many years ago when I moved to a home that had a yard full of fleas...we couldn't walk in it without having our legs black with baby fleas. I haven't...

    Basic H as a de-wormer?

The only thing they found that would kill the spread of killer bees was Dawn....no other agent has worked so well as spraying the colonies with this powerful surfactant. Same with removing the oil from sea animals.

    Common milkweed and hair sheep....

I've got a large stand of common milkweed in the pasture my hair sheep are in and they will soon reach that stand in their rotation. They LOVE the milkweed when they find it here and there in each paddock and they've had no ill effects, but I don't know about letting them into such a large...

    Basic H as a de-wormer?

It would and does....but Basic H is supposedly "all natural" whereas Dawn has a truckload of bad chemicals in it. Now, we only have Basic H's word on it that it's made from soy proteins, as it's a proprietary ingredients list and they don't release it. Salatin said it wasn't originally...

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

I've had four other Anatolians besides this one and one Anatolian mix besides that and not a single one could be categorized as "aloof".....not even close. In fact, I'd call them all velcro dogs and not just to family....anyone we introduce to them has a dog in their pocket from then on if they...

Coronavirus Covid-19 Is it Affecting You and How?

    Basic H as a de-wormer?

I don't think there would be any bad side effects. Joel Salatin only confines his cattle to Basic H infused water for 3 days, so that could be the norm? In this heat, I doubt I'd confine them to water they don't like the taste of....they will either drink it plenty and it will be fine or...

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

I agree....some never trust again. But...it was HIS fault he ran through so many owners, as he was an escape artist. Willfully wanting his own way and refused to be confined by fencing. To me, that's not a smart dog...if you want your home, STAY at your home. Any dog that doesn't stay...

    Basic H as a de-wormer?

I think you have a valid point!

    Basic H as a de-wormer?

Actually, I think a drench would do it....the Basic H is a soap, which is just a surfactant and acts on the worms by removing the protective coating of oils on the surface of their skin, thus allowing the gastric juices to destroy them. I'd say a dose or two of the soap would contact all the...

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

He felt the same way about his previous owner, apparently....she said he was friendly but aloof, which is how I would describe him....not exactly friendly but he's not aggressive either. I'd say submissive but anxious if I had to describe him. It's likely from having 6 owners in 10 yrs time.

Larsen Poultry Ranch - homesteading journey

I think I'd be freaked out by poisonous snakes in my garden too!! We've pretty much eliminated all the copperheads hereabouts and have only seen a few in the past 25 yrs now. You'll have to take to wearing snake chaps to garden! :ep

Teresa & Mike CHS - Our journal

That's a GREAT price!!!! I'm paying almost 3 x that much for the same amount. We too stopped growing sweet corn here due to lack of space and success, so have been buying it from one particular farm for the past several years. Wish we were closer to the Amish now....

Tell me about your farm workhorses...ATVs, 4 wheelers, tractors, side by sides, etc.

My son seriously wanted the 2 seater with dump feature type workhorses, but you are right....the price doesn't justify the tiny dump trailer and a second seat. They are expensive to fix, can't fit into the same spaces a 4WR does and use more fuel. So, I convinced him to NOT go into debt to...
