    Homestead Security

Don't know what kind of LGDs you may be using, but you may want to invest in a Kangal, Anatolian or Akbash in the near future. Much more people wary and aggressive than GPs and GP mixes, so could give you more peace of mind. We don't get strangers around these parts, but some of our neighbors...

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

We'll look for one or Eli will build us one...he's got a welder now, so he needs the practice! :thumbsup

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

There is....we need to work on it to make it more narrow and also provide a place to clip the sheep's head up so they can't back away or put their heads down. We also need to drop the sides down lower. More tweakage needed at this time but we'll get there.

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

WOWZA!!!! YES, that helps! Will have to get that stuff on hand...we were dipping the blades in hot water with degreaser in it, then spraying with WD40 for the lube. THANK YOU!!!!! :hugs Eli wanted to pick up one of those stanchions we saw for sale the other day, but I can just see my...

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

How often, say....after every 4 strokes down the body? Because that's about all we get is four strikes down and then they start to snag in the hide and no longer cut. The solution....is it a degreaser solution? Does the clippers have to sit in them for awhile or is it just a dip and swish...

The new sorting system needs some tweaking, which we knew would happen, but it's still discouraging. The alley was too wide and also too tall for me to work it, even with me standing on a railroad tie. The catch pen will have to be expanded by the time we have lambs, as it's just too small...

    Triple Dewormer?

Yep...in these parts(not exactly, as I have to drive for 2 hrs to get the best pricing) the highest prices are in the winter months, between Jan-Mar. Took 4 older lambs this past winter and after the auction fee we got $924 for them. And they were averaging around 100 lbs....if I had taken...

    Triple Dewormer?

We've got 9 ewes here also and it's a slow build towards the numbers we want, but 3 of those ewes will be sold at market this winter when prices are higher. Any lambs they produce this fall, if female, will be given a chance to show the influence of the ram in their genetics, but the least...

Coronavirus Covid-19 Is it Affecting You and How?

Reposting this post from a sister forum....too good not to share. https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2021/05/blue_state_blue_mask_blues.html @TexasLisa: These are the paragraphs I found interesting: In that April article I wrote about masks, I talked about those ubiquitous blue masks...

Best dog that protects animals and kids?

Therein lies the problem, I do believe...a difference in perception. Not many people are having gun fights out there on their land, so they don't need a gunfighter. A dog with a knife will usually suffice. ;) I'm not the kind of person who carries a gun around on my land nor need a dog to...

You are right....it's the humidity that will get you. Like breathing through a warm, wet towel across your face.

    Triple Dewormer?

I've never heard of that system and it sounds good in theory....but that leaves 1% of worms that are resistant to 3 types of dewormer as the only worms left alive to reproduce. I'd be more prone to culling the sheep that didn't maintain condition when all the others did, thus eliminating the...

Larsen Poultry Ranch - homesteading journey

Never heard of bunny burgers and bunny jerky!!! That would be a LOT of bunnies, a LOT of work deboning bunnies to get enough for that. My hat is off to you for a ton of work on food production! :thumbsup

Oh, I'd definitely melt into a big ol' puddle of grease at those temps!!!! Don't know how you farm in such weather!!!! I'd have to do all my farming at night and the animals would only move at night also. :th

    Feelin' a bit sheepish...

Been getting pretty steady rain these past few days, which is a huge blessing!!!, and that gravel is giving us our money's worth. Nice to be driving the 4Ws back and forth into and out of the shed area, working under there and walking about without encountering mud. Still working on turning...
