Can 68in electric netting stop a mountain lion?

I just had a long call with a mountain lion expert. Check out their website: Living with Lions. I think a mountain lion could jump that fence easily. Also electric fencing in the dry season isn’t so simple, since the ground won’t close the current. You’d have to have the type that has the return...

    Nice looking easy fence?

The hog panels are a splendid idea - they seem just right! We‘ll get a few nice wood posts and some tposts in between and that should work nicely... Thanks so much everyone!

    Nice looking easy fence?

Thank you for the ideas! Anything electric is a bit tricky here because it gets so dry over the summer the ground will not act as a return for months. I have some of the premier temporary electric netting and it’s very practical, but I am hoping for something long term thats a bit prettier. My...

    Nice looking easy fence?

Is there possibly a nice looking, easy to set up fence that would keep sheep and chickens in? We just need some fencing to keep them away from the house and cottage. We are dreaming of something we could put up ourselves. Is there any woven wire fencing that doesn’t need stretching with heavy...

Rabbit enclosure is infested with big rats

Please don’t poison the rats - any predator picking up a poisoned rat will get poisoned, too. You can trap them. Going forward, if it was me, I would build a rat proof enclosure for the rabbits. You can still have an outdoor area, just don’t feed them there. Since rabbits should mostly eat hay...

Would you buy these rabbits at this price??

Fantastic! They look adorable! How is their temperament? I have only had pet rabbits and I can no better imagine breeding rabbits for eating than I can doing that with dogs, but better heat tolerance is very useful for a pet rabbit as well...

    One less “herd animal” today

Oufff. She needed to be a California bee... I just looked at our Shiro plum tree in full bloom and wondered if there are enough bees out yet for us to get a good crop... I just see a few here and there.

    Zip Tie care...

I‘d be careful with rabbits and zip ties - they can chew through them very quickly if they can reach them.

    Orchard grass versus normal alfalfa?

One more voice to say, yes, not a good idea to feed alfalfa routinely. They should get a nice grass hay as the bulk of their diet, timothy is great, orchard is ok, whatever they eat well.

Coronavirus Covid-19 Is it Affecting You and How?

This is not a responsible way to communicate about the Covid vaccine or any issue for that matter. „Some people say“ is a terrible way for supporting any argument. Who exactly, where did they get that information and what are the qualifications of the people making these statements? Same for...

Question on using electric blankets for baby poultry; chicks, ducklings, etc

I have used the ceramic heating bulbs for reptiles in brooders, and they are as easy to set up as a regular lamp, but sturdier, and don’t give off any light to keep chicks up all night. Of course you have to secure your lamp properly to make sure it can’t fall. Make sure you get one without...

Coronavirus Covid-19 Is it Affecting You and How?

Please do read this. My heart breaks for the doctors and nurses. So many have been separated from their families, sleeping in cars, garages, hotels. And people aren’t willing to put on a mask or keep social distance because it is uncomfortable.... oufff. (from the NYT today) “Health care...

Coronavirus Covid-19 Is it Affecting You and How?

Oufff. We have been basically sheltering in place since the beginning of March now. Hubby is over 65 and I have hashimoto‘s, which is an autoimmune disease. Oldest back from college doing all work online, younger one doing Junior year in highschool remotely. We don’t even go out to shop, it’s...

    Question about grass...

I think we are easily tempted to look at our domesticated animals and compare them to their wild “versions” to figure out what would be best for them - and I am sure that can sometimes be helpful, but domestication changed the animals and changed what they need to thrive... Frankly, I don’t know...
