Hello, Baymule! I so enjoy following your posts, and have learned so much about LGDs, pastures, and general ag/herd/farm management (I don’t have horses, but I enjoy those posts, too). Thank you!
I’m in Milam county. Their ag extension website doesn’t list anything regarding pasture/land...
I’d love some experienced opinions:
I’m planning a new metal barn for my 7 Kunekune pigs and 9 Nigerian dwarf goats. My husband and I are debating location. The red spot would be closest to house for ease of access, but not near the pasture (I’m concerned about smell that close to house). The...
I see references to this, but I have no idea what this means. I live in central Texas (45 minutes west of Tx A&M). I have a pasture that has been unattended for 8+ years that I would like to “improve” for my goats and Kunekune pigs (and remove potentially toxic plants). Other similar posts...
Hello, all! I’ve been reading through the many threads, and very much appreciate everyone’s insight and experienced guidance. I would appreciate some direction. I have a 3yr old pyr/toli male, Baba, who is very protective of his domain, but not particularly bonded to my Nigerian dwarf...
Hopefully some more experienced LGD people will chime in, but it’s my experience that a second dog allows them to alternate who’s on duty. I recently added 2 pyr/toli pups to my single adult pyr/toli. The eldest seems to be more willing to pause his patrols as the younger two are finally...
Will definitely watch the spacing. We’ve been using Retriever dog kennel panels from TSC that are 2”x6” spacing (and 6ft tall - overkill but nice), but they are pricier than more traditional farm fence panels that link together. I’m thinking I’ll use my kennel panels for creating a kidding area...
I like your idea...I’ll price out some plans and compare to the fence-panels a nearby welder sells here. I love the idea of flexibility to adjust the walls, but with goats and pigs I know I need the walls to be sturdy!
I’m planning a new metal barn for my ND goat and Kunekune pig hobby farm. I’m located in east/central Texas and my soil is very sandy. I don’t want to do concrete foundation. I know I’ll need to have the pad “prepped” before building. Any recommendations on the type of gravel/fill to use that...
We built a 4x4x8 shelter out of 3.5 sheets of plywood (craigslist!) with basic 2x4 framing. The front is a half sheet, so the left half is the door opening. It just sits on the dirt, but I put shavings in for the winter.
I cut out some windows and covered the openings with leftover hardware...
I have 2 female Kunekune piglets, about 6 weeks old. They’re too small to go in my pen with my bigger pigs. Here in Texas, we’re about to approach the 40s at night (chilly for us!). Do the piglets need a heat lamp or am I overworrying? They have an igloo with thick, dry bedding, that faces out...
I have 5 Kunekune and 3 PBP, all female, ranging in age from 6 months to a year. They get along great. I’ve always added to my herd 2 or 3 at a time so I can keep the littles separated for feeding, protection, etc but not lonely, until they’re ready to join the herd. I just picked up 2 more...
Has anyone given their pigs Goats Prefer Probiotic powder? I give it to my goats when off, and it seems to help...Since I have it, wondered if my pigs would benefit.
Yes, I have people-sized doors (2, actually). I was thinking put a board across the bottom of the opening that the chickens could jump over (and I could just step over). My husband was thinking block off one people-door, and cut out a small hole that only the chickens can get through. I figured...
I have a small herd of 4-6month old kunekunes. They free-range in the same 3 acre area that my 4month old chickens spend their days. I have kept the coop doors closed during the day so the pigs don’t get in it, but I realized this means the chickens can’t access their nest boxes (once they start...
No worries. I did escape the city after working/living in Houston for 20 years... I don’t have “country credibility” yet, but I have great respect for what is required to live a rural, ag life. I’m humbled often, but I am thankful to learn each day (both from personal experience and from people...
I’ll check out the site, thanks.
The size of each side of the scrotum varies, so I wondered if hydroceles or hernias...Will monitor for now as he’s otherwise doing great.
We’re on 120 acres, near a town of 400. Definitely cow country. When we drive to Austin, my husband and I wonder how long til suburbia’s tentacles extend out to impact our home....
