Thanks for the reminder, collector! I've been sick for a few days and haven't taken pictures yet, but that shouldn't keep me from posting about them!
Anyway, I ended up getting THREE does from the seller. A 5 month old, a 1 year old, and a 2 year old. At least, those are the ages I was told...
I am trying to plan out my future litters without duplicating expenses unnecesarially. That includes the number of nest boxes I should have on hand.
Do kits make use of the nest box the whole time they are in the cage with their mother, or do they abandon it before that time? If they stop using...
Looks like I'll be getting my two does this weekend. Two Californians. One is 6 months the other is 1 year.
My buck is a New Zealand red. So that'll make for some interesting color possibilities, I think. But NZ/Cali seems to be a recommended mix for meat rabbits, so I'm happy with that.
I'm...
Wow, I found this today by accident: http://braggnrights.tripod.com/culling.html
Its an article about how NZ rabbits are judged. Points for this or that, how they should look, how the body should sit and move, fur type, etc. And references to the ARBA handbook for more information.
Hope its...
I had a Samoyed for several years (before he died). That hair was just wonderful to spin!
It's still on the spool, though, I haven't decided what to do with it. Honestly, once it's made into yarn it just looks like yarn.
My hang up is that this is wonderful yarn, from wonderful fiber, from a...
Hmmmmm. I would definately keep an eye out for infection. There are very few antibiotics that rabbits can have, so you might want to go ahead and get some if you can find good ones.
I might be tempted to go ahead and process that one, since you have an overabundance of bucks compared to does...
Yay! That's so cool that you got free rabbits. I wish I could find a deal like that over here!
You ought to be able to find some photographs of rabbits who won prizes (at fairs and such) to compare body shape and size with yours. And of course be on the lookout for a rabbit that just doesn't...
Well, I weighed half the cooked rabbit, and it weighed 2 lbs. And the uncooked spine that I'm using to make broth weighed almost 1 lb. So that adds up to just under 5 pounds of rabbit meat and usable bones. Not bad at all!
When I picked the rabbit up from the cage, I guessed he weighed around...
Good question, I did not weigh him. I know he filled the large frying pan full of pieces (some with bone still in, like the legs) even fuller than a chicken does.
I have maybe 2/3s of him left for tonight's dinner. I'm curious now myself, so I'll take out one of each piece and weigh that...
Well, we ate the rabbit tonight!
I cooked him in sauteed onions, garlic, carrots, and seasoned beef broth until everything was rather carmelized. DELICIOUS!
A bit tough and chewy, but I'm blaming that on his age. Definately a recipe I'd try again, with a younger rabbit.
I was...
Yes, I filed a police report. And the remaining rabbit now lives in the chicken run behind a locked door.
I have a hole in my flowerbed - some small animal dug it while I was at work today. So I'm hopeful that means the rabbit is still around! I put some food out where his cage used to be...
GAH! How annoying!
They were both there when I fed them last night, and only one was there when I went out to change the water this morning.
The cage is hardware cloth. No opening bigger than an inch except for where the feeder hangs, and it hadn't been disturbed. The door was still latched...
I am just starting into the world of meat rabbits. I bought three rabbits through a Craigslist ad on Friday. Two NZ reds, and one black Rex. The Rex was considerably smaller than the NZs, would scratch and kick when handled at all, and had an infected cut over his eye.
I intended to treat the...
I don't know enough to answer your question. I just know that all the debates on color that I see seem to recommend the whites. But a lot of the reasons seem to have to do with what people do with the pelts afterward - white pelts seem to be easier to sell, and the leather on the back looks more...
I'd do that in a heartbeat! Can't hurt to go look and see if you can catch them. If you can't catch them, then it isn't like you've paid anything. Same thing with if you see them or catch them and don't like their looks, you also haven't paid anything and can walk away.
I'd get a big fishing...
I'm really excited. I've thought about this for a long time and I'm finally starting it.
I pick up three buck rabbits today. None proven, so I'll take all three in case one or another doesn't work out. Two New Zealands and one Rex.
I have my cages - big ones, 5 or 6 square feet of floor space...
