Welcome!
As far as minerals, she doesn't really need them at this point if she's still getting milk replacer. The milk replacer is a complete feed, and has everything she needs in there. It wouldn't hurt to buy a bag of sheep feed (at least a 14 or 16% protein). Mineral can be pretty pricey...
I honestly dont' really know that tipping/sitting/etc a ram will do anything for his temperment. I worked on a farm that had a very aggressive ram, and he would charge you in an instant if he was out with ewes. He wasn't too bad when he was with other rams, but he hit me several times, and hit...
I know you originally said you're feeding him a low protein, high fat feed, and now you're doing a protein top dress. What percent protein does that come out to be for his feed? I'd also consider adding in corn oil to his diet. It's good at putting on weight and also will be great for his skin...
I'm trying to do the same thing with mine as well, by feeding as many scraps as possible. I'm just not sure plain veggies will be enough protein. I know it depends on what exactly they're eating though. I've been giving mine table scraps, excess goat milk, and scraps from a local resaurant...
Well, I thought it would be risky to not castrate because of the boar taint...but how long does it take for the meat to get boar-y? Maybe next year we'll skip it if we get males again.
Hi Fox! Welcome to the forum. :) So can I ask what you guys use the milk for? I'm just curious. I love sheep milk, it's wonderfully creamy and rich. And sheep cheese is delicious!
On the wool trimming, I'm not sure the paramedic scissors would work well, since they have a blunt point and...
I don't have whole body shots, but I got this cute pic the other day. The boys are 8 weeks now, but won't be weaned for another week or so because there are pics in the pen in the barn where I was planning on putting them.
And here are some pics of their sisters just for fun.
Here's...
Still no signs of kindling soon. No hair pulling yet. I realized she was using her nesting box as a litter box. :barnie I cleaned it out and just put it back in there empty, and put some hay in her cage. I figured when she starts to make a nest she can just move the hay into the box, and...
Yes, it's the ear piercing squeeling that makes it so difficult I think. DH was there for the second one and it really helped hearing him say things like, "You're almost done," "He's ok", etc.
I castrated the boys today. Hadn't done it in a long time, but it went fine. I felt so bad though! :( Poor little guys. I would have liked to do it sooner (they're 3 weeks today) but I wanted to make sure they were healthy and stronger. Funny, but disbudding goats doesn't bother me nearly as...
I'll have to talk to DH about it. If he wanted to go (probably not crazy about meeting strangers 11 hours away) he'd want to drive our own car by ourselves. He's weird about carpooling because he always feels trapped! :P If he doesn't want to go, I'll have to figure out if I can get away (ya...
When pigs are raised in close quarters, they often chew on other pigs' tails. They dock the tails so they aren't able to bite them. Boredom plus fighting I guess. That's also why they clip needle teeth, because they can scratch each other up pretty good. And they notch ears instead of tagging...
I agree, no heater. Keep in mind it's harder on animals if they're transitioning from warm to cold and back and forth. As long as she has a draft free place, she should be fine.
And where are pics? We love to see pics of new babies! :P
