Anyone else going? I'm making the trek down from Ohio with some of my jacobs to show for the second time ever. There's going to be a huge jacob crowd so it should be fun. We'll see if I get all the ones I want to show halter trained in time.

Is 5 years old too old to breed a Maiden ewe?

I've bred some 3-4 year olds for the first time with minimal issues. The only problems have been if they've had a really giant single lamb or had gotten too fat to conceive. Worth a shot, in my opinion, as long as you can keep an eye on them during lambing. Still have plenty of good, productive...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

Yes, the nomadic people do use the gers! That's what most people who don't live in cities live in, although there are some small, simple houses here and there. They move seasonally, from grazing area to grazing area, so probably at least 4 times a year but some may move much more often. It...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

Our cook was very impressive and I don't think we ever ate it the same way twice. They don't have access to a lot of spices or firewood so things were commonly just quickly stir fried with noodles or boiled. They slaughtered a sheep for us on our last day in the field and that got barbecued but...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

This is as close as I got to people looking majestic on horseback. This is in Sükhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The eagle hunters are much further North than I was. I did see a baby vulture the size of a plucked turkey. The mother was hovering ominously overhead so...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

One of the coolest things I saw in Mongolia were the wild horses. Przewalski horses, or takhi as the Mongolians call them, are a separate species from domestic horses. They were extensively hunted and captured for zoos and circuses and by the 1950s there were only 12, all in captivity. At that...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

Oh! I forgot that some people raise camels too. It's hard to see but I swear there are camels here. This is more common in the South near the Gobi Desert. The main predator herders have to deal with is wolves. It was really shocking to me to see wolf pelts for sale everywhere. Even the main...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

Mongolians eat a lot of meat. So much meat! There really isn't arable land because it's so dry and windy and cold so they live off of their livestock who can graze on what little vegetation there is on the steppe. We were there at the end of dry season so it was just about as dry as it gets...

    Backyard Herding in Mongolia

I mentioned this in another thread but decided it deserved its own post. Hopefully you all find this interesting! In addition to running my sheep farm I'm getting a masters in biology. The program I'm in has optional summer trips that take the place of classes and after a lot of dreaming and...

The sheep were fat tailed karakul types called baidrag sheep. The goats are all cashmere goats as cashmere is a major export for Mongolia. All the animals they use are at least triple purpose, providing meat, milk, and fiber or hides. Even the horse manes and tails are trimmed to make strings...

I'm getting my masters in biology and I went with a class. We stayed in gers (yurts) and visited with the nomadic people there. Didn't spot any of the wild cats we were looking for but I got to see a lot of sheep, goats, cows and horses. I felt right at home!

I was in Mongolia over the summer and they don't eat anything as lambs. They think it's crazy to eat a baby when you can eat an adult and get way more meat. They also prefer their sheep fatty and serve the fat separately sometimes, especially the tail fat from the fat tailed sheep they raise. I...

I did a whole shoulder from an older ram in my smoker with an herb rub and it was amazing. I could have just stood there and eaten it with my fingers if my family wasn't waiting for it.

    Ohiogoatgirl's Escapades & Adventures- Pulse check! pg14

How nice of that gentleman to gift you nice stock like that! 20 ewes is perfect because that's how many CIDRs come in a pack :p I wouldn't bother staggering them with that few ewes to a group, as long as the ram doesn't play favorites it should be no sweat to cover all of them. Fingers crossed...

Talk to me about Jacob sheep!

2 horns is recessive to 4 horns so if both parents are truly 2 horned then no. There are cases where a parent has 4 horns but they are fused and look like 2 horns, despite genetically being 4, so they can have 4 horned lambs.

    Headbutting

Always keep an eye on him and when he goes to smack you with a horn act like you've lost your dang mind. Flip him, yell at him, growl in his face, just put the fear of God into him. If he's disrespecting you he needs to be taught you won't take it. It doesn't sound like he's charging you or...

    Spotty Lambs of 2018

Everyone needs spotty sheep! Spots make everything better. I think I can post a whole bunch because I link them from my own hosting (I use flickr) instead of uploading them to byh? I dunno, that's just how I've always done it because I post to a couple of different places that all use bb code.

Wool quality for spinning and fiber arts

Fleece stays finer and they tend to produce more when they're wethered. Plus they make much better fiber pets. There are millions of rams with nice wool in the world, go ahead and band him.
