Ridgetop - our place and how we muddle along

DH has now decided that a scenic trip is just what he wants. :) He has identified a scenic route in Arizona and one in New Mexico. They will only take us a day or two out of our direct route to meet DS1 in Amarillo. On the way back he wants to drive through the Painted Desert. Tomrrow we will...

The water in the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer has a somewhat high iron content as well as some aquilinity. The iron in the water is what is being blamed for eating pin holes through the piping. Apparently the current well was dug in1972 so is an older well. The well piping is probably cast iron...

They may not have hyperactivity disorder - a lot of city kids with that diagnosis probably would not be diagnosed with it if they lived on a ranch and had ranch chores! They need sheep and with 3 boys to supply with milk, dairy goats and chickens! LOL Your neighbor knows where to send the if...

Wonderful behavior on your dogs' part! Your dogs charging without making a sound is normal for livestock guardian dogs. The other dogs were charging at you and were a danger. Your dogs knew that and responded approriately. LGDs don't bother barking when attacking a predator. Why bother...

If you are selling the ramand wethers at auction 5 months is a good age. How much do they weigh? If you are not happy with Coconut's growth and conformation, cut your losses on her and sell her too. What is your nearest auction yard? Call them and ask what lambs are going for right now at...

    Recommendations for Goat Supplies

You can make a keyhole feeder out of a piece of plywood. Measure the shoulder height of the adult goats. Measure up on the plywood from the bottom and mark for a 6" wide slot. The slot should be 6-8" wide x 10-12" tall. On the top of the slot trace around an 8" cake pan. Cut the circle out...

Is Dan ld enough for 4-H or Junior Grange? If so, have him raise a veal calf for auction at the local Fair. With your dairy herd it would be economical since you would have the milk. Only expense would be the purchase of the bull calf. Veal auctions at 300 lbs. or 3 months. If you can find...

    Our First year Lambing! (2024-25)

Sometimes the ewes will go off feed for a day r so, then the lambs shift into psition and they start eating again because there is room in the rumen again. Llamas can kill coyotes and dogs with their huge claws on their front feet. Several years agp we had some cougar problems (illegal to...

Luckily DH loooves to drive and won't let me drive for more than short periods. Apparently I "scare" him. :gig Not sure about the trip. He says he can go alone but I don't want him to drive that far alone before he has his cataract surgery. Still talking about it. Today I went out, folded...

Changes in temperature can bring on pneumonia - like summer colds in people. Do you have a livestock stethoscope (available cheap on line)? Listen for wheezing in the lungs. Easily cleared up with Pennicilin.

I read somewhere that you can pull out or cut off the tomato bushes and hang them upside down on the porch or in the basement and the tomatoes will ripen. Haven't tried it since I did all my gardening in southern California but read it in a gardening magazine for cold climates.
