    Tre3hugger's Rabbit Thread

Some of the kits are soo much more rotund than others. I can't believe she is getting them all fed. I keep expecting to find #9 didn't make it (she only has 8 nips after all) but I just checked again and all are squirmin. Although some are obviously the biggest and "strongest" I hope they all...

I have a question about my nest box

The mom is a NZ and the dad is an AmChin. I have been checking everyday, expecting to find that ninth one dead, but so far so good. This is day 5 and there are still 9 going strong. I think I will go check them again now, just because I like it. :)

Maple birthed 10 kits on 4/24/21. One didn't make it. We currently have 9 thriving kits and mama is doing such a good job! All the kits appear black so far.

I have a question about my nest box

How often if at all do you change out the bedding if the waste cannot escape? No ventilation is needed? Thank you for your reply!

I have a question about my nest box

So I am getting ready to give my doe a nest box tomorrow. I have a wooden one from tsc. Typical shape. It is solid backed and bottomed. My question is, should i drill holes in the bottom and/or back of the nest? Should I remove the bottom entirely and replace with wire? This is the box...

Has anyone here ever used the Ballista Penetrating Bolt Gun from bunnyrancher.com?

I have done a few using a pellet gun. I think, like you said, death throes are an inevitable action of the nervous system's last hurrah. I am hoping the bolt gun is quick and easy for all involved.

Has anyone here ever used the Ballista Penetrating Bolt Gun from bunnyrancher.com?

That makes me feel a LITTLE better. I am planning to process my rabbits at 8-10 weeks or 4-5 lbs. I think I read that the ballista is rated for rabbits up to 12 pounds so 10 is the high end of that spectrum. I'd imagine the skulls are quite a bit thicker then. Hopefully the gun will be at least...

    Question about colors

All the buns from this litter are for the soup pot anyway. MAYBE if I get a super fast growing boy I will hold him back for my meat line goals, but in that case color wouldn't really matter. :)

    Question about colors

It is basically a lottery. The dad (pure, pedigreed) American Chinchilla seems to have a pretty well documented and pure genetic history. This tortoise shell NZ on the other hand...no pedigree. MAYBE pure NZ but I can't say I really know.

Wow ok thank you that is very informative. What size were the meat rabbits you have been having problems with?

    Question about colors

Thank you both for the info. The calculator shows 40 different possibilities! Most do seem to revolve around chestnut though. Guess I will just have to wait and see. A week from today!

    Question about colors

So I am expecting a litter in about a week. The mother is a Black tortoise shell (I am 99% sure) New Zealand. Here she is very pregnant. The dad is an american chinchilla My question is, what colors might I expect from this mix? Thanks!

    Tre3hugger's Rabbit Thread

Will definitely update here. I will likely try it on some cornish x chickens in a week or so, and some rabbits in a couple months.
