    Jeff & Monica's Journey

I am a little disappointed and confused though...I offer to pay a deposit to hold them til we can get the fence and the seller is telling me she got burned on a deposit and is now going to leave the posting on craigslist up until we pick them up. I offer to pay deposit so that they know we are...

    Jeff & Monica's Journey

Hi all I thought I would start a journal when I am about to add some new animals. I grew up on a farm--my first pet was a pony of all things! We raised cows, ducks, chickens, geese, sheep, goats. I learned a lot from my Dad and a lot of trial and error. Now that he has passed on, my Mom...

    raising turkeys

My Hubby found the chicken crate in the old barn that my Dad used. I remember it to be much bigger when i was 5 years old. I think it is antique since it was already old way back then. I don't think I can get all 18 cornish rock in there without cramming them in, but it think it will be just...

    Sick little billy

How is the little guy doing? I have been working a ton of hours lately, but the billy goat has been on my mind. I was hoping to see a few more responses to help you figure this thing out. I also thought maybe he ate something he should not have....nightshde, rhubarb leaves, etc.

    Saying goodbye to Bailey

When we have a cat getting closer....we switch to a canned food. The gravy makes it easier for them to eat when every movement hurts.

    Sick little billy

Not for certain, but he sounds like he is in rough shape. Can you get a poop sample and take it to the vet? Maybe some gatorade to help get some fluids? Let him sit in the shade if the weather seems to hot. Someone (Baymule I think) in another thread mentioned baking soda in their water...

    raising turkeys

I made contact with a guy in an Amish community to take my birds to for butchering this morning. None of those roads in the area have names on them so finding the right road was pretty interesting. They are asking me to bring 2 or 3 coolers full of bags of ice, give them water as usual, but no...

    Fleas!!

I think too it helps to do an all out approach and not just treat the dog and cat, but also your house, their resting area, the yard and then once you regain control, keep them from coming back. If you see a flea, surely it is not the only one around and finding the main areas where they come...

    raising turkeys

i just finished the medicated chick starter so today they will be getting meat bird crumble. I have a turkey/gambird chick starter for the turkeys. I have been putting kale that i shred in pieces and the turkeys are right there with a look of "what you got??" I put the clump of dirt the kale...

    Fleas!!

We used to get fleas in the carpet in the basement, so we found that putting salt is good for killing the flea eggs as well as adults, especially if you can put it down and leave the area for a few days so they can't jump on you. Salt is relatively cheap. You can use it on tile floor or wood...

    raising turkeys

Well another update: Stuffed puffed up and his eyes got real big, even his tail fanned out! I picked him up from behind and put him in the other run for a bit to move their run they stay in. I figured that out from the egg layer roosters--they can't peck if they can't see what is holding...

    raising turkeys

Update here on my chicks: They are doing great and getting nice feathers. I think I have a boy and a girl as the one is much bigger and keeps pestering the other one for attention:hugs. She is smart though and wants nothing to do with him until there is food and then she tolerates his...

How worried should I be when the woods has a multi-generation family of woodchucks

We have decided that we will be getting a livestock guardian dog and name him S.W.A.T. and he can have a doghouse to guard from that we will call HQ. He will keep everyone safe.

    Asking question about feeding greens

I am not sure on this answer. I went to the garden forum and got a little more feedback about ivy for goats and sheep. I would hate for you to 'give a little' and be cuddling them and all of a sudden they have reaction.

    Bought a scythe!

:bowOOOh yet another thread for me to gather answers! Among the many boxes in Dad's barn is a huge scythe & I am most certain it is antique. It has a beautiful swoosh to the wood and the metal has long been rusty, but I know he used it within the last 10 years. Would it be better I wonder to...

    Best fencing for pigs?

I was hoping this one would have pages of answers LOL. I am tossing about the idea of the moveable pig tractor setup vs electric rolled wire. On my searches so far, I have seen electric fencing with holes that are about 4x4 squares...is this a better option for pigs? does anyone have a...

G Morning! I would like to start a journal, but not sure how to do that. How exactly do i start one? I don't really mind if people post as long as they stay on the topic path, but when the topic strays... I am really enjoying checking conversations to see what might arise through our travels...

    Homestead Security

I think i would like to have a LGD named S.W.A.T. He will keep everyone safe. edit to add: his doghouse can be named the headquarters. We have a fence kennel that we can put tarps and a roof over it. We can put pallets for the floor and store our feed and straw.
