Just finished a marathon lambing session. Ewe started to have contractions about 4pm yesterday, serious contractions 5am today, pre-birth 10am, 1 (ram)lamb out with serious help from me at noon. 1:50pm on day two, everyone's nursing and alive, although I suspect I may be partly zombified...
Thankyou mysunwolf
I'll give her foot some purple stuff to ward off rot.
Good idea about the pen. Do I keep her lambs in there with her? The lambs are huge and the pen isn't. If I went by weight, I could probably wean them weeks ago, but would really like them to taper off naturally.
Now...
Poor little thing. Good thing she has you to love her.
A few things off the top of my head that may help diagnose why this happened:
Did she get enough colostrum (question for the others as much as for OP, is one day worth enough)?
What are you feeding her?
What minerals are you providing...
3 year old katahdin sheep, has a limp. It started about 5 days ago, and isn't improving. Was wondering if you could suggest anything else I should look for to diagnose or treatment ideas.
Her hoof looks fine, no smell, no peeling, nothing misshapen, no clogged goo vent... between the toes...
Bit of a slow start with the lambs, but they are improving now. Big head definitely hogs the milk. Every night I check on the lambs, and if they are a bit cold, or thirsty, I either get mummy up for an evening feed, or supplement a bottle for the little lamb.
They are starting to play...
Thank you sheepgirl for the encouragement. I'll take your advice to heart.
Sun just went down and it's dark and rainy. Thankfully not too cold (about 9 degrees C with a forecast low of 9... so probably go down to 6 tonight).
Lambs and mum are in the jug. Mum was great and gave birth in the...
I have a couple of years lambing experience under my belt but this is a first for me. I'm going to put it under emergency as I know the first 24 hours of life are the most critical for a lamb to survive and thrive.
Two baby ewe lambs born just before midday today. Mum Southdown X Black Welsh...
This is a great thread, thanks for sharing your experience.
One thought on the mucky milk bucket bottom - what my goat friend does is have two buckets, one for the actual milking and one to keep on a nearby, clean shelf in the barn. The milk from the milking bucket, goes into the shelf bucket...
Thank you both very much, this is a great start to my milking adventure.
The sheep I hope to milk are katahdin. They are suppose to be good milkers, and have decent sized udders for a sheep. These are huge girls, but calm. I can walk right up to them and put the halter on, all they do is...
Is this the right place to post about milking sheep?
The lambs are about two and a half weeks old - ish, I think, I'll have to check the calender. Anyway, they are hay munching and nibbling on stuff now, so I thought it must be time to milk the ewes in earnest.
Only...
...all I know about...
The ewe is mending slowly. Still looks pretty miserable at times.
I think the vaccine is definitely what did it, but what to do about this in future. If she's this miserable from the vaccine, I would hate to see a sheep in full tetanus.
So what to do in future? Is she going to respond...
Temperature feels normal. I haven't a working thermometer at the moment.
I've actually got all the equipment at home for a fecal sample (since I already have the microscope, the supplies cost less than the vet charges for one fecal test). With everything that's happened these last few weeks...
Picked up the Valbazen, but I don't think I'll give it to them yet. My reasons:
If Ivomec is starting to decline in strength, then the more I use it the more resistance will build up - there aren't many wormers available here, so I would like to have the opportunity to use ivomec again if I...
As for the worming at this time, it's my call. I could go with my old wormer that isn't very effect any more, ivermec, or I could use the new wormer which has some risk to the fetus and mum's health (although minimal risk this late in pregnancy).
Vet says that it's not an uncommon side effect. Give it another 24 to 48 hours and it should improve. If not, or it gets worse, call them. There is an anty-somebigword that we can give the sheep, like they would for normal tetanus.
I forgot to ask if this is going to be a recurring issue for...
Thanks guys for the kind words.
Still nothing from the vet yet.
This is the their booster vaccine shot. They had their first shots as lambs, and they get booster every year.
Talking to one of my sheep gurus and she says it is odd to get these symptoms after the vaccine shot. There are...
I bit the bullet and called the vet with the symptoms. Waiting back on the reply.
Canceled everything else for today - Today is now dedicated to sheep.
I'm on a little island off the west coast. It' was extremely cold last night, it went down to ALMOST minus 2 degrees C, but up above 10 degrees C in the day. As well as trees, rain shelters and windbreaks, they have two open 'houses', one a three sided small shelter, and the other an old...
I forgot to mention, she was shivering/shuddering when I handled her. No shivers before I wrangled her - she was strong and really didn't want to be sat on her arse - and stopped shivering about 50 seconds after I let her go.
Stress or pain? Symptom of something else?
Never seen a sheep do...
