I have a 36 gallon turkey fryer that has it's own propane burner. We had that going full blast melting snow. Our local Kroger has a station that you can bring in your own empty water jugs and get them refilled for a lot cheaper than buying full jugs of water. Maybe your local store has...
Here is hubby getting water from the creek. The waterfall under the bridge was the only place it was still open. He had to break the ice to get it open enough. That is ice he is standing on.
Mabel's babies were born last Sunday, it was cold, around 20 degrees so I was checking regularly. I really shouldn't have worried- Jack had it under control. I put him in the broodmare barn when it got cold so he would be there to keep the new babies warm.
I saw you are applying to Washington. My ex's dad has a ton of contacts at the vet school at WA State in Pullman. He taught at the med school there and UI across the border in Moscow. Unfortunately, my ex and I had a falling out and we haven't spoken in awhile. I feel bad, I wish I could...
I grew up in Phoenix, used to freeze to death if it got below 50 degrees. Yesterday I was out in 30 degrees without a coat saying- wow, it really warmed up (it was -29 on Friday morning.)
I hate the cold too. :hide
Do the research- it will make you stand out. Everyone applying to vet school worked in a vet's office, very few will have any research experience and even fewer will have any experience with birds of any kind. Volunteer on Saturday's with a vet, my vet usually brings a high school student...
The minis are so cute! I want one, but my vet ( who is primarily an equine vet and raises Paso Finos) says the minis have a lot of health issues. Is he right?
I am so sorry SheepGirl. :hugs That is going to take awhile to fix. I hope you have another source of water. FYI- snow takes a long time and a lot of propane to melt. :hide
WE HAVE WATER!!!!!! Not much, but about a day's worth. The snow meting off the roof gave us a slight reprieve. Hubby called the water station, he said he will be open tomorrow and expect a long line. :celebrate
I went to the laundromat today for the first time in about 15 years. It cost...
Congrats on the babies! I would love a doe kid out of Mo Clone, she is a nice girl. Hubby doesn't like goats without horns...hint hint.....(next year don't disbud them) :p
It has been a difficult week. Temperatures dropped to -19 on Wednesday and got down to -29 yesterday. It is a virtual heat wave out there now at 30 degrees. We are not set up for this kind of cold. The barn is a three walled structure and the field shelter is three walls with metal sides and...
We band and it is the easiest. You should wait until he is at least 8 weeks, 12 is best. The longer you can wait the better. Wethers are very susceptible to UC and the larger the urethra is allow to grow the less chance they have of getting UC. It will stop growing once he is castrated...
I would feed just plain pasteurized, whole vitamin D milk. A baby will need 30-40 gallons to get to weaning and creamline milk will get very expensive fast. Feed 3 times a day,as much as they want. They don't need every few hours, 3 times a day is fine. Good luck with them. It may be best...
Lespedeza is a legume, like alfalfa. High in protein and calcium. Good stuff if you can get it. The pellet work as well but goats need some roughage. If you feed the pellets they will still need some kind of long, stemmy stuff to eat. Either forage or hay.
Zorya and Peron got altered yesterday. Vet says they have to stay in the house for a week! They are so mad at me. When hubby took them out to potty this morning, Zorya slipped her collar and ran right for the barn!
Here they are at the vets. They look so sad, I feel horrible. :hit
