First time with pigs !
We got 7 mix heritage breed pigs about a month ago. I would guess about 60 lbs each now, obviously some more some less. Is there a number of lbs/day of food hog grower (14% protein I believe), we shoul be giving them. They wolf down what we give them twice a day but are...
I can across a guy giving 2 potbelly pigs away, they are 5 yrs old. I'm figuring they would be good for sausage & ground only. Has anybody tried this ?
Can pigs get sick from to many apples ? We have a more or less (as many as we can pick up) source of unlimited drop apples once harvesting is done. Obviously we would continue to keep their regular feed available but they seem to prefer scraps to that currently.
Our pond is infested with the stuff, just for the I scooped some out last year (maybe a trash can worth), & put it in the pasture. The cows never touched it, left it to rot. As others have said it was a a lot of work just to get that amount, not worth it.
We have a mix of pure Highland & Highland Angus crosses. This spring we started using MIG, in place of standard grazing with free choice hay. The cattle have adjusted well to the method. Starting with a pasture roughly a foot tall & moving once it is grazed to 3-4",( ussually 2 days). Most of...
Excellent advise. We got really lucky when we bought our bull he is the sweetest of all our cattle, I can already see his disposition in his calves which are all less than 2 months old, they are more friendly, have not been as disrecpptful of fences as last years, they are still rambunctious...
Any updates on this method ? we have our first pigs coming in about a month I was going to use field fence, then saw Joel Salatin's new video (or a preview I should say, I ordered the entire DVD). Like others said he is using one wire in the clip I saw. I was sceptical of his other methods...
Update.
We had a wedding to go to last weekend out of town, leaving Saturday morning (eary 7 hr drive). Kids were already over at Grandma's, wife & I took advantage went out for nice dinner. We came home about 10 & she went out to shut the door for the chicken run, they free range often. She...
Here is a pic of the two of them from the day second one was born.

These two are little buddies already, rough housing, chasing each other, its really cute other than walking under the rotational grazing fences ;).. The older (about 2 weeks difference) of the two has filled out nicely...
We just put a deposit on 7 piglets, 2 are for wifes uncle not sure if they are staying here of his place. They were just born & won't be here till mid July (10 weeks or so). Now I have to build an area for them. This is my thought, to the rear of our sorting area the cows made a mud pit last...
My wife says the new little guy isn't making things easier on his brother, he reminds her of our kids teasing his older brother.
She watch the little guy walk under the MIG fence stroll over to the gate where his brother is with milk dripping off his chin, stroll around in front of the gate, she...
He is a Highland, as Wild Rose said. He is the first from our "unproven" bull (conceived here) so one item down :). His mom is the one that had the issues with the steer calf (that we had to bottle feed) last year. This little guy has done great ! Second item down. :)......with one issue his...
We have 3 mature Highland cows & a Bull. When we bought the cows they were "bred", the guy had sold his bull early in his herd dispersal, so he borrowed the neighbors Black Angus bull, we ended up with 2 heifers & a bull calf (now steer) last season, that are half & half. My question is they...
We had a similiar issue last year with a calf (there are many posts on here about him), we too are giving the mom a second chance. Not sure what went wrong she is attentive now, allowing him to feed (how much he gets I dont know), licking him etc. Still dont know what went wrong, like yours he...
I don't have pigs. We have cows, had a calf that had similiar issues with bonding with mom last summer, he almost died twice. We had to tube feed him electolytes the first time, second I didn't let it get that bad. I kept him our old horse stall. We ended u bottle feeding for a while, then...
Our first two cattle (steers) were a Jersey & a Jersey/Holestein mix. I had alot of issues with them challenging fences, we fed them grain 2x a day, it was a good bit of work, I was glad when the summer was over & they went to the freezers.
THEN my 2 year old daughter started "Where the...
I priced it out last fall when we took in two pigs my wifes uncle had raiased. The butcher has a mennonite farm that raises pigs for him & quoted me bround about $ 425/ out the door whole pig, butchered/smoked/vacum packed. It worked out that was roughly the same for us to raise one, without...
