I milk 4 Fresians and get about 3 gallons a day total (+/-) for the 2 daily sessions. But 1 of those is very young and super finicky about the whole thing so she brings our average down a bit. Right now we feed a bit of wet beer grain with some pellets during sessions, but I'm thinking about...
The couple I work for brings the wet grains back to the farm in barrels directly from the brewer's. We feed it to the lactating sheep and to the egg layers. It's good for them - high protein and fat!
@Southern by choice That's very good advice. The more I think about it, I'm leaning toward starting out with chickens. Because who can't live on eggs and veggies for a while? :) But I am anxious to start milking. I found this great website today...

Thank you. I've heard stories of people get dogs to guard the livestock and they turn into more trouble than they're worth (like eating the chickens/rabbits). Has anything like that ever happened with you? And what's your advice for keeping a successful LGD?
We want to raise them for meat. Still doing my research, but I know we don't want giants. I read that New Zealand are great for meat. As far as goats, we just want fresh dairy. How are you finding the Nigerians?
