I started out with Florida Whites and quickly changed to CA's and NZ's. Then we progressed to American Blues and onto Silver Fox. All are very good meat rabbits.
The FW's were terrible mothers, so I needed to move on. My rabbits sell for $15 for mixed meat mutts and the Americans and SF range...
Domestic rabbits in hanging cages will likely not have worms. In 7 years I have never had that problem. When I feed intestines to the dogs they get the entire carcass minus the hair. And that is for my neighbors sake.
Hanging wire cages is the most sanitary and less maintenance. Put tubs under them for easy delivery of manure to your garden. Rabbits are very territorial and don't do all that well in colonies. Its hard to know when rabbits have been bred and when they need nesting boxes or material.
The only time I add heat to my 13x25 barn is when it gets around 30 and its just to stop the water in my crocks from freezing. I don't use bottles in the winter. Unless your under a server blizzard I am saying they are fine.
It's quite normal for them to wig out a bit. Sometimes you even have to wait 12 hours and carefully put her in the next box and hold her calmly so she figures out that nursing will release the other discomfort she is having.
I am sorry you lost your girl. That is always hard.
I am curious about your statement that rabbits seem to have endless health issues.
I have been raising rabbits for over 7 years and have had very few problems health wise.
I look forward to hearing what health issues you're having.
I have had that happen twice in 7 years. I wouldn't be to concerned about the next litters. I know it sucks if your trying to sell pairs or trio's. But bucks taste good to... :)
I have had that happen twice in 7 years. Then next liters were more equal. Are you selling or just for meat production?
As far as kit size at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 10 or 12 it depends on litter size, genetics and how good of a mother the Doe is.
I have had rabbits that are great mothers and after...
All I can say is if it were me, I would give your boy some more time because he is young. Just like in our world, sometimes us women can be a bit over bearing and make him nervous to get his job done. Some need more practice then others. I have one doe who is nasty to just one of my bucks. I...
Like mentioned the Does may require a bit more light to get them in the mood. Unfortunately cheese, crackers and wine doesn't work at all! :) My experience in 7 years the Buck may be a bit overweight. That is an easy fix. Cut his food in 1/2 for 3 days and then put the Doe in with him...
Tamuk NZW line are more heat tolerant. They are hard to find, I have a few and love them. My SF bucks came from FL and do quite well in the heat. We all still need to remember, Heat is a rabbit killer. They do need to be checked on and watched after 90 degrees.
I do not have many of them any...
I will have unrelated American stock available around April 24th. SF litters will be a week later.
We have breeding stock currently in Kansas, Wyoming, Minnesota, Colorado, California, Missouri and Nebraska. We only sell the best stock and eat the rest. Raising rabbits for 7 years.
If...
It might be the bucks but it could be your Doe has gotten heavy also. An overweight rabbit is an unproductive rabbit. I see no reason to put her on her back to help get her pregnant. I have raised 5 breeds of rabbits in the last 7 years and as long as they are in shape and not heavy they do...
Overweight would be my guess in my experience. They can be very hard to get pregnant when overweight.
I know you don't seem to have problems with the bucks and does together but there could be problems down the road. for example: If the Doe gets bred 3 days in a row she will be at 3...
Heat is a rabbit killer Tyler. Anything over 85 degrees can cause issues. I am in Kansas City and I have my rabbits in hanging cages in an insulated building. For the really hot days I have a small a/c unit in there. I have never needed to use any kind of heat source. I have friends in...
Congrats! New kits are always thrilling. The only thing I would recommend is getting her in more like a 30x36 cage as it gets quite crowded in there with a bunch of babies as they get older. Glad things went well.
I have a couple very productive cross breed rabbits. One doe is 1/2 CA 1/2 NZW and when bred to my NZW or my old CA she always had great looking nice growing kits. I think it depends a lot in your stock. I have been working off of certain rabbits and lines as I know what kind of efficiency I...
