How to cover an acre of bare sandy soil in Texas summer to prevent erosion?

I have about an acre that has been completely torn up by a construction project. It will be wrapping up in the next few weeks, but that will leave me with a big area of bare white sand. My property is at the top of a “sand hill” so I get a lot of wind, too. I tried seeding some small patches...

    Automatic waterers in sub-freezing temps?

Hello everyone. This is my first year with Little Giant trough water floats. I’ve loved them in this crazy Texas summer, but I’m wondering if I need to completely dismantle them, or if I can just shut the water off to them during a hard freeze (we didn’t used to have much in the way of hard...

Max dose Benadryl for kunekune pigs?

My pet girls are really congested from the crazy weather. I’m worried it could progress to pneumonia, so thought I’d try Benadryl. They’re all 250+ pounds (conservatively!). Online dose guidelines say 1mg/pound but I can’t find a max dose (other than 75mg for a “mini pig”. Thanks

When to plant crimson clover in central Texas

I did not. I’ve been waiting for rain…now I guess I’m too late. Thanks for checking in on me. I haven’t been on here much to follow your move/new property, but I’m always wishing good things for you.

When to plant crimson clover in central Texas

New to cover crops. Hoping to provide some winter grazing for my pigs/goats (along with hay). Am I understanding correctly that it will grow through the winter (barring another arctic blast) but shouldn’t flower til spring? When my ag co-op advised this due to my sandy soil, I didn’t realize...

    Green Carpetweed?

Does anyone have familiarity with this plant, specifically safety for livestock? I’ve read that it is edible for humans, but haven’t found anything for goats/pigs. Thank you!

    Newbie!

Welcome from Texas! There are so many experienced and helpful people here. Start reading the forums on the topics you’re interested in and you’ll find a TON of info! I lurked a long time just absorbing the info before I ever even posted. I, too, am a city girl who now loves living in the...

    Babies!

Congrats! Your herd has grown (and improved) so much with all the work you’ve put in. I’m so happy for you.

    Babies!

I’ve got every hay feeder filled to the brim, every water container full, and the shelter reinforced to minimize wind (while still some ventilation). Added lots of fluffy bedding, too. Thankfully, we have a generator so will be able to heat water as needed. I just bought a new wagon, so I’ll...

    Babies!

MORE BABIES! Two more ewes delivered. One more set of twins and a big singleton. We have unusually cold weather coming to Texas shortly (around 0). They all have good shelter. They were all running about happily in the 30s today. Lots of dry bedding. They should be fine, right? Not used to...

    LGDs in subzero temps?

Forgive this nervous Texan, but we have sub-zero temps forecast in a few days. I have three pyr/Anatolian crosses. I’ve never worried about them in any weather, but we’ve never been below teens. One has classic pyr fur, the other two have long fur but not quite as thick. All have been fine down...

    Babies!

Isn’t this what everyone does? Should I NOT be snuggling them and breathing in the new-lamb-y goodness?!?!? How does anyone restrain themselves? The mama is my friendliest ewe, so she’s coming up for her own share of cuddles. Hasn’t been out off by my “interference” at all!

    Babies!

They’re so at peace...I’m envious (and I hear you - fellow member of the ‘black sheep club’. :-)

    Babies!

My first lamb babies! Mama was looking big with a nice udder for the last couple weeks. I checked on her this morning - doing her thing, eating her breakfast. I checked two hours later: 2 babies on the ground, almost dry, nursing and walking around! So proud of mama. These babies seem so much...

    New to the block

I’ll give the 22 a try. Dang, they are destructive! I stay organic with my plants as well. I tried orange oil/Dawn/water mix on my potted blackberry plant when DE didn’t deter the fire ants. I seem to have finally gotten rid of them, but the poor plant looks like a poodle, with just tufts of...

    New to the block

Question for @Baymule and @Hideaway Pines : how do you keep pocket gophers under control? My dabbling in gardening has been limited to containers on my porch as we have so many gophers (despite my LGDs’ occasional success at killing them) and of course fire ants. I have toyed with starting a...
