    Blessedfarmgirl's Journal

It is such a gorgeous day today!! Sheep are enjoying the last of the green pasture before a possible frost this week. I'm enjoying them enjoying it. Moses started barking at the guys clearing the right of way across the road. Just doing his job! One of my best ewes. Never needed help...

    Rotational Grazing on 2 Acres?

There has been a ton of good advice on here, but I thought I'd share our system as well. We use temporary electric fencing designed to be moved easily. We move them frequently, anywhere from every other day in the spring to about a week in the summer. In winter we feed hay on pasture and move...

Sentry, Baymule’s Livestock Guard Dog RIP 11-11-24

I am so sorry! 😢 I didn't see the change in the journal name until today, so I was expecting another Sentry turtle story, not this. Sentry was a big blessing to you and to everyone who knew him. He fought the good fight, he worked hard, he loved hard as only a dog can, and now he has earned his...

Help me determine is my sheep have started “showing” in their pregnancies

I use a mix of both. I trained them to electric with the netting, but now they stay inside 3 strands of poly wire. That's a bummer the grass you had planted didn't do well for you. Maybe they weren't good grasses for your area?

Help me determine is my sheep have started “showing” in their pregnancies

Have you considered portable electric fencing? There are a ton of great options out there. That is what we use and have not had any parasite problems at all, even this spring when it was very wet. It was a more cost effective solution for us rather than sectioning off using permanent fence.

    New from East Texas

Same for us. We came from the big city to start a homestead, which was a huge change. God is so good to give us the desires of our hearts! A lot of answered prayers for us as well. The name of the processor is Whispering Pines Meat Processing. If you google them, you should see the contact info...

Help me determine is my sheep have started “showing” in their pregnancies

The waiting and not knowing due dates is so hard! I've been SURE a ewe was going to lamb so many times only for them to wait an entire week longer. They just love to keep us guessing! At least they have to let the hostages out eventually lol. 🤣

    New from East Texas

Welcome to the forum! I'm happy to see another East Texan here! Emory is only an hour west of us. My family is also a homeschooling, homesteading family. I'm the oldest of 3 girls and manage the farm. We have Katahdin sheep that I'm breeding up to registered, registered dairy goats and chickens...

Help me determine is my sheep have started “showing” in their pregnancies

Mine usually start bagging up about 2 months before delivering. It could be as long as that, or as short as a few weeks or even days. Their udders will most likely "pop" or increase by about ten percent the day before they lamb. Do you know when they were exposed to a ram?

    Blessedfarmgirl's 2025 lambing/kidding journal

Since I'm still establishing my foundation herds, I bought and bred a LOT of animals this year. (well, a lot for me.) I'm very excited for what my new herd sires will do for both the sheep and goats! I will also be retaining my first doelings and doing almost all bottle babies for the goats. I...

    Blessedfarmgirl's Journal

Well, I thought I was done buying animals for the year, but apparently I wasn't. 😆 As some of you know, I bought a really nice ram lamb from Baymule this past summer, and planned to use him this fall. However, due to his rough start, (not his genetics) he wasn't doing well. I penned him and fed...

I know!! And now I'm starting to see why. 😂 But I still love my nigies, I'm not to that point yet. I think the mini Nubians are the best of both worlds.

    Blessedfarmgirl's Journal

Well, it happened! I brought home my first mini Nubian yesterday! I am so in love with her already. She is the sweetest, chillest goat ever. The breeder is exceptional, she takes amazing care of her goats and it shows! So much better then my last experience with a breeder. Willow is bred and due...

    Blessedfarmgirl's Journal

Thank you for explaining all that! I was thinking that, but it makes sense why they wouldn't bark. I don't know if we'll do winter grass this year, but that's a good idea! I planted one of our pastures with clover last year, and we do have one big perennial rye pasture that I use every spring...

Grazing season is just about over, especially with the drought. I have the sheep on mostly dry stockpile and they are not liking me. 😂 They let me know whenever they see me that they are maaaaad and that they want me to make the grass green again. The alfalfa mollifies them slightly. They also...

    Blessedfarmgirl's Journal

Thank you all! I really look up to a lot of y'all as far as dog training, so it means a lot to hear you say that. They both got extra love and pets and peanut butter and they got gravy and meat on their dinner! And they got chicken feet. I have started giving those as treats and they are loving...
