So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

It definitely didn't work :( Bought a banding tool. It's too small now...or rather, the baby is too big to band now. :( I don't think we'll be using the burdizzo again in the future. In the end, it seems like it's not really more humane if you have to redo it. Pretty disappointing.

Yup, we have a house goat....

That is TOO adorable! I think ours are going to need to learn some tricks now. :)

Question about letting the mama goat self-wean her kids

Wow - what a good mama! It must be pretty adorable seeing such a big baby try to get under there to nurse. lol.

So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

I felt his dangles and they feel the same as his in-tact brother's, but they don't look like they're getting any bigger. I can't really compare the two side-by-side because one of the babies is about 1/2 the size of the other. Does anyone know how old is too old to band? I'd like to give it a...

Question about letting the mama goat self-wean her kids

So far so good. Up until yesterday I had been letting the babies in with her once every couple of days and giving her the choice to nurse, but she wants nothing to do with it. She's really full, but I suppose if she were desperate she'd let them drink. Hopefully she'll be dry soon. The babies...

So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

Thanks for the feedback and the link. That website is actually where I found the info on the burdizzo to begin with :) I'm still not sure it worked. I haven't actually felt them to see if they're getting hard. I suppose I need to. Gross. Yesterday the baby and his mama were nose to nose...

Question about letting the mama goat self-wean her kids

Thank you for the feedback. I will continue to put them in with her once a day then, but I'll let her decide whether or not to let them nurse. So far she's deciding not to. I did milk her a tiny bit yesterday - she looked like she was going to pop! Thanks for the suggestion about the herbs...

So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

LOL! Yes, my husband was such a trooper about the whole thing...it's amazing what vodka can do! The baby is still healing fine - you'd never know anything happened. Although my husband said he was sure the cords were clamped (I had my eyes closed), I'm wondering if it was completely successful...

Question about letting the mama goat self-wean her kids

I'm hoping for some feedback on whether or not it's OK to allow a mama goat to decide when to stop letting her kids nurse? If she refuses to let them, will she dry up on her own or will being so over-full of milk cause problems? The kids are 3 1/2 months, so they can definitely be done...

So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

Well, we did it. I have to say, we were making much bigger a deal of it than it was. In the end, I think it was much easier on the little guy than banding, but much harder on us. It was absolutely much easier on him than disbudding. Here's how it went: 1. Poured the baby a heavy dose of pain...

Another day passed...still staring at this thing. Couldn't work up the nerve to do it. :/

Question about heat cycles & pregnancy after birthing

Thank you - we're loving them! Don't let the mastiff fool you - he's mostly interested in licking the milk off the baby's face when he's done with his bottle :) But he is a good protector, too.

So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

So, do you guys think it's just more difficult to do, or harder on them? I only ordered it because it seemed like the recovery would be easier on the little boys. It took almost 6 weeks for the banding to work on the older boys, and then they were left with an open wound when their dangles...

Question about heat cycles & pregnancy after birthing

Of course! Mama & BamBam Ringo Pixel & our Mastiff - the best of friends. Pixel was REALLY tiny & under-developed - she wouldn't let him nurse so we had to bottle feed...it's been a long couple of months, but everyone's doing well. I think Pixel is at least 1/2 blind, but he seems OK...

Question about heat cycles & pregnancy after birthing

@20kidsonhill - I just wanted to update you to let you know you were right on with your estimate! She kidded July 10 and had adorable triplet boys :) We've had our hands full but everyone is doing well.

So the Burdizzo arrived in the mail...

...and man, this thing is scary looking. It's been sitting on our kitchen table for a week, and my husband and I just keep walking by, staring at it and shivering. We still haven't worked up the nerve to schedule a day to do it. I really hope it's easier on the little guy than banding, because...

Question about heat cycles & pregnancy after birthing

The grain is a three grain mix - it's oats, corn and barley with nothing else added. I'm giving each adult doe 2 cups of that per day. The hay is alfalfa. I'm giving enough hay in the evenings that there is still some in the bowls the following afternoon. Then they have access to pasture all...

Question about heat cycles & pregnancy after birthing

Thank you again for the feedback! She is not nursing or milking. When we picked her up the first week of April, she was "deflated." She had 3 month old kids then (triplets), but he wasn't milking her so her udders were droopy but flattened out if that makes sense. I am giving minerals but have...
