I have a Katahdin ewe I am milking. Arthritis in my hands was hurting when hand milking so I made a DIY Henry Milker. When I get the teat cup attached properly it works great but I have so much trouble getting it attached...and then the ewe moves and the suction is broken. Does anyone have any...
My small flock of sheep were attacked this past weekend-not as badly as your goats as I didn't have any deaths at the time. I still may have casualties as I'm trying to keep infection at bay-I'm cleaning wounds daily and administering penicillin but I saw one had developed an infection in her...
I have painted deserts-definitely a hair sheep. They usually have a lot of barbados blood so are a little more flighty than some other hair sheep (like Dorpers and Katahdins). I handle mine daily so they are not super flighty-I think a lot depends on what environment they are kept in -turned...
Just thought I'd say Hi from North Texas (Gainesville). We have a lot of common interests, we have horses (hubby is a horseshoer) and a small flock of painted desert sheep which I use for training my australian shepherds.
What wonderful pictures and puppies. Looks like the rooster is doing a great job training them too! It looks like you'll have two nice guardians in the future.
My ram stays with my ewes. He's young and well mannered and doesn't present a problem at all. I have painted desert sheep not sure if all rams can stay with the ewes all the time. Works well for me.
Breed: Painted Deserts
Why did you choose them? Ease of management(don't have to dock tails, most rams left intact), attractive, no wool, smaller size than some hair sheep
What are you using them for(lawn mowers, meat production, etc)? I use my for herding dog practice, raise/sell
How long...
I can't really express much of an opinion on the personalities of these sheep compared with others as the only other sheep I have any exposure to is the Dorpers my herding dog trainer uses. I can say they are pretty easy to handle with the exception of one older ewe who is the type who breaks...
I love the painted desserts -they're a great low maintenance sheep. No tail docking, no shearing, not disease prone and they are so colorful. Here's a few of mine:
Here's my young ram - he's 7 months old here:
A couple of ewes with lambs (the lambs are twins and belong to the Champagne...
It's a beautiful day today so I decided I'd better get out and take advantage of the weather and take pics of the young uns before they grow up. These are all painted desert sheep.
My first lamb this season -a gorgeous ewe lamb- I just love her color. She was born Dec 13th so is just over 2...

I have a 6 month old ewe hair lamb (mouflon breeding) that has an occasional stiff hind leg. She'll be walking normally and then she'll take a stiff step or two almost like the stifle is locking? Can sheep have problems with locking stifles? She is small for her age as she was a bottle baby...
I'm new to sheep this year ...so far have been feeding horse quality hay to the sheep when necessary. I was wondering about feeding a weedier hay to the sheep ...it seems the first thing my sheep eat when they are turned into a new pasture is tree leaves, select weeds and then the coastal...
I got her warmed up. I do warm the bottle. Tonight she'll be coming inside as the temps are supposed to dip below 40 and it is raining- that will make the air damp and cold -not good. I don't want to over coddle her but I'd sure hate to have her get sick from not coddling LOL!
I'm raising my first bottle baby. She's a week old barbados and seems to be doing well.
I'm keeping her in a pen in my yard. The temperatures have gone from high 70's to mid 40's overnight. I just fed her and noticed she was shivering. I have her pen bedded with dry hay (I don't have straw)...
