Bruno meets a pig
Oskar’s jump gate
He’s still spending most of his time in barn/field with the lambs, but he likes being able to pop into the front field to get a better view of the driveway.
We had a “stranger danger” incident early Monday morning. My sister was still up at 0130 when a guy knocked on the front door (why she answered the door at that hour 🤷🏼♀️). He told her that his car had “slipped off the road” and could she please help pull him out of the ditch. She thankfully...
On to Oskar….some days I love him and some days he stresses me out. I’ve never 100% trusted him, but I’m pretty sure that’s a me problem more than him. I have some PTSD about LGDs. He also tends to be rude/spazzy around me. Lots of flailing and getting in my face. I’m sure he’s just trying to...
July has been a struggle. I’m having some unexplained health issues (mainly exhaustion and pain) that have been hard to work around. I also got Covid (only the 2nd time I’ve had it) a couple weeks ago. I missed a couple days of work, but was otherwise ok. It’s been hot and sticky and I’m not...
Triton in a stall didn’t last long. Someone, not sure who, played with the gate latch last night and released him so now he’s in the barn/field with the lambs and 2 old ladies. He’s being nice to everyone so I let him stay. He was living with ewes, lambs, wethers, and rams when I picked him up...
I spent 12hrs in the car today driving most of the way through OH and back to get my new Shetland ram. I also picked up 3 other sheep from the same farm and delivered them to someone else on my way back. They paid me to deliver and that covered my gas for the drive.
I threw something together...
13 sheep went to the sale barn today. 5 adults and 8 lambs. I kept back the 5 Shetland ewe lambs, 2 Shetland ram lambs, 1 Border Leicester ram lamb, and the 3 Border Leicester ewe lambs.
I was debating about whether or not to send one of the Shetland ram lambs. He’s a nice color/pattern and...
Hazel got her full splint on Monday. She’s not nearly as upset about it as her face would imply. 🤣
Oskar Bitey-Face has been here for 2 years. I saw some major maturity improvements this week.
He mainly lives with the rams because the ewes have been so spooky with him. He’s not really...
I got a brace for Hazel that arrived today (was supposed to get here 2 days ago). I’ve also ordered stuff to splint her leg which is arriving Monday. She doesn’t seem to be in as much pain, but she’s being good about staying quiet.
Hazel has a boo-boo.
She was chasing after Twist on Monday, racing him to the barn. I didn’t witness the accident, but I heard the impact. A minute later Hazel came gimping back to the house to show her injury.
She ran into this fence post that is waiting to be installed.
She was gimping...
Day off today. I’ve been stressing about getting stuff done outside. I lost a couple days last week because of bad weather and high pain levels. Apparently I’ve reached the age when my bad joints can predict the weather.
I finally got my garden bed next to the front sidewalk planted. I wanted...
7 years ago this week, I lost a huge piece of my heart. My Meg. The dog that instilled the love of BCs in me. She was the stereotypical Border Collie. Full of energy and more than a little OCD. I still miss her so much.
Twist has done a lot to heal my heart.
Up until this week, Twist has...
Ram delivery went well yesterday morning. The guy was already there when I arrived (only a couple minutes late after getting stuck in Lexington traffic).
Then we went and played with sheep. Actually, it was a lot of sitting and watching and a little playing with sheep.
I did discover that...
It’s not something that I’ve ever heard any concern about.
There’s differing opinions about whether it’s a good idea to put the wash water in the septic tank. I do, but only because I’m washing 1 fleece at a time and they aren’t high grease. I wash in a utility sink. I’d like to set up a drain...
All is good with Jura and baby. I saw several nursing sessions via the camera last night and again this morning.
I finally got my female ducks out of the pond. They are currently locked up and seem to be enjoying their time out from the boys. I am missing one. It’s my gimpy Runner. I don’t...
Well, Jura is still a ditz. She likes her baby, but is very jumpy. I had to go out and hold her to let the lamb nurse. I tied her first, baby got a good feed. We tried again with me just blocking Jura in a corner and baby got another good meal. Third try was with grain and no restraint m. There...
Finally done with lambing! Jura had a single black ewe lamb tonight. This is my only black Border Leicester ewe lamb this year. She’s not up yet, but she looks pretty nice already.
Lambing stats:
Average gestation was 147.2 days. 10 ewes went at 147 days, 1 at 146, 3 at 148, and 1 at 149...
