LOL please go tell my Dad's goats to be picky. Of course, they aren't livestock....they are dogs with horns that live in the pasture with the donkey and cow. He walks them on a leash and they love him.
Both places I got these goats from claimed they fed them Noble Goat. :hu
Last time I checked goats eat just about anything! My Dad's goats like everything from Popsicles in the summer to good hay in the winter.
MY goats hardly eat the Noble Goat I bought them. They pick at the Timothy and use the Fescue as bedding.
UGH. What am I doing wrong?
The 50x50 is just the "starter pasture". I'm going to have 2 tiny ND and don't worry they won't be out eating without supervision. I'm working on a deal for one of those temporary electric net fences so I can move them around the rest of the woods/pasture so they can eat to their hearts desire...
So I finally have my first goats! I have a doe and her 6 week old doeling. I'm also getting a first freshener on Wed. Right now I have Mom and baby stalled so she can get used to me. I have some of my fencing up/planned but I'll be finishing the rest this week.
My plans:
15x15 sacrifice...
I'm putting up my goat fencing this week and plan on putting smaller than needed holes so I can put my teenager free range chickens out with the goats. I'm going to put the teenager coop on top of the goat "hut".
I'm a complete newb at milking and plan on getting 1-2 ND does soon and will hopefully be milking by late summer/fall.
What I understand:
-Get/build a milking stand
-Train goat to walk on stand. Bribe with food and handle her.
-Clip her
- Wash/dry before starting milking
- Milk into a SS bowl...
Ok thanks. I think I'd like them with horns. Not that I have a problem will polled ones but horns have never been a problem....and like you said when my Dad's need to be relocated and are being stubborn...they make GREAT handles. LOL
While y'all are discussing it....why would you want a polled buck/doe? I've always been around goats with horns and not had a problem. My Dad's mutt goats both have horns and there aren't issues....just curious.
Thank you so much for the offers. I'd LOVE to come see your goats and meet them. I'm really hoping to find a few really nice ones.
Where are y'all located? I'm just north of Raleigh.
Thank you for your help. I'm going to be researching them. I just wish I already had my fence up. LOL
I'm not opposed to meat goats....I just won't be eating them. I have had goat meat before but I'd rather spend the money on a cow and eat that instead.
I have a LOT of learning to do before I think about milking. I'm thinking a year in the very miracle minimum. I work 24 hrs a day every other day so milking right now really isn't an option and I don't plan to be out of this career for many many years. I'd have to find someone to milk on the...
I've seen a few Nigerians advertised but I will read up more on them. I live in central/eastern NC.
Are they friendly? I tend to make pets out of goats.
I'm interested in getting a few goats this spring. I am familiar with a few breeds but I know there are tons of options. I'm going to be fencing in their area in the next few weeks and I'm shopping for the right LGD. They will be in with chickens. Fencing will be about 900' or so. Future fencing...
Oh don't worry. Rabies and current shots will be checked. I'm not going in blind. I would like to see her reaction to strange dogs(is it training issue or is it the dog) and see her around the animals. My other concern is what kind of fencing are they being kept in and will they stay in the...
LOL don't tell Dad that. His last cows were the hardest to keep in. The goats are VERY respectful of the fence. I think he might just have dumb luck.
I'm trying to talk my LL into funding the field fencing. is 47-48" high enough though? It would be a smaller area 990' of fencing instead of...
Even with the hot wire? I was thinking the netting would be more of a visual barrier. My Dad keeps his cows, goats, and chickens in 3 strand hot wire. LOL
I don't currently have a LGD but I'm looking to get one this spring.
I'll be putting up fence soon and adding a few goats and have chickens. Most of the chickens are in their pens but I'd like to let out a breeding pen per day or have a group of free rangers.
Any advice on buying a puppy and...
