I use powdered goat milk from the healthfood store and powdered buttermilk mixed up and add a splash of coconut water to top off the bottles. Seems to work pretty well for me. I would use raw goats milk but it's not available here from anyone and the store cow milk is just plain bad and expensive.
I do plan to start feeding on the stand and then build from there when the time comes. My husband has to build me the stand next week then I'll figure out how to set up the milking area. I'll try to bluff my way into the queen part until I'm more experienced with all of it. Most times I get a...
I'll see about getting myself some milking experience then before whatever I buy kids. I can't really expect her to be perfect unless I put in the work on myself. If it all works out I'll post a pic of her Sunday evening.
So, it sounds like possibly I'm not going to get exactly what I thought with an experienced milker. I guess the issue may be with hand milking and the fact that maybe the goat won't like me even if I was an expert. Interesting. I guess with machine milking it's not so personal with the goat...
That is exactly what I've run into with experienced milkers for sale. They have all had feet problems or mastitis or pretty much name any fault physical or behavior wise. I didn't think anyone would sell a "good" milker. The place I'm going to see the goats seems like they are going to have at...
I have never milked before but want to start so I'm shopping for a goat. I would prefer an experienced milker to help me learn but none are for sale. I found someone with a saanen toggenberg cross doe that is due to kid for the first time soon. Am I setting myself up to fail by getting a doe...
They wanted to sell a dexter/jersey bull that has bred all the cows the last couple years and this cow as a package deal. I'm quite sure it was to make it easier to sell the bull because most people wouldn't have enough cows to justify a bull. I emailed them when I saw the ad and told them I...
I go to see her on Sunday and I have a list of questions about her all ready for the owners. She has had three calves all easy births. They milk their cows so I'm assuming she has also been milked but I will be there to try her out. I'll certainly ask about the bummer calf raising. I have...
I'm new to cattle and looking at a dexter/ jersey cow or heifer to milk and raise the future calves for beef. I don't need gallons of milk everyday so I'm planning to milk once a day and leave a calf on if I get the cow. She has had calves before and should have been milked but I will check on...
