Can it be done ?
We kept three female piglets & wintered over from last years piglets, plan was/is to AI. I just came across someone on craigslist that has Americian Guniea Hogs that are 6 months old. It didn't say if they were cut or not. I've heard good things about both Guniea Hogs and...
Never AI anything we have a bull for Highlands. The gilts are mixed heritage breeds. My original plan was to only keep 2 (I figured one would get lonely/bored & cause issues) but freezer filled up. Piglets here are tough to find (& in high demand) in spring to summer over. My plan was to...
Last summer we bought 7 piglets. We finished 4 of them for the freezer, keeping 3 females to breed. They are now "of age" we have noticed them go through a heat cycle.
Any recommendations on places to buy supplies for AI ? And/or any tips ?
I've looked online & prices vary quite a bit.
You have to get creative, we have used all of the methods listed above. If all else has failed for piglets, I use a salmon fishing net. It has a long handle. They learn quickly to avoid it at which point it becomes a great herding tool as well. Larger pigs I use food, luckily as ours have...
Will calf hutches work for housing pigs, I came across some on craigslist for a decent price figured they might be decent housing at a good price for our pigs.
Very good advise we started out in cattle with a Jersey and a Jersey/Holestien cross both about 1 year old steers. They were high maintence compared to what we have now (lots of grain required). The Jersey always had a crazy look in his eye I never turned my back to him.
Congrats
What were you feeding them ? This is our first year with pigs. I was concerned about the smell as you mentioned my uncle raised two last year the smell was god aweful. He had them in a small pen (roughly 12x16 ?). We have 7 here now, since July, no real noticeable smell they are in...
Does anyone do it ?
I have noticed that our younger cattle are doing well...but our mature females seem a little thin to me. I'm also comparing to the neighbors Herfords that get cabbage scraps constantly as well. if looking at the dairy farm down the road they look fat ;). It may be just me...
From what I have seen here animals (cattle & pigs), grow at different rates, hit growth spurts etc. For instance we had a pig we bought as one of the smallest, she stayed that way for a while......then in a mater of a week she grew to be in the middle size in the group... And is still...
We started raising pigs this summer. We are considering keeping a couple females to breed (thinking AI). First how complicated is AI, I was able to locate Large black semen online easily figuring that woul be a good fit we currently have mixed heritage breed pigs. Second do the males need to...

Have you looked into Galloways or Belted Galloways. We found them after we had or Highlands my wife loves the pictures of them we didn't inverstigate to much because we already had highlands. They are another heritage breed with long hair (not quite like highlands), but no horns. I believe...
We raise Highlands & have a couple highland/angus crosses. We only breed/raise for beef so I can't attest to the milking, butterfat, etc. There is someone on craigslist in our are that is selling one trained to milk supposdly. Our highlands are much easier to work with than the crosses & all...
She continued to act up. She is now penned in our sorting area (about 50x50) that has wood fencing. I put a round bale in there & a water trough & left the door & gate open to our vacant horse stall. We did this with her 1/2 brother who was stealing milk from his mom & it broke him of it. I...
One of our heifer calves (13 month old Angus/Highland cross) from last year has been acting off, our bull has been all over her so I'm assuming she is in heat. My concern is she has walked right through the electric fences the last couple day, I know it's on & has good spark. Yesterday when I...
Yes, Manure is runny.
We ended up giving them hay as well since I posted this, better to be safe than sorry. It's just the mature cows that look thin, my guess is I'm worrying to much to a mature cows body type is different than a steer, bull, or heifer.
They are fun, the kids seem to enjoy them as well, at least for now....they get big quick. They are so friendly unlike cattle which are more shy. We may try breeding a couple not sure yet, the males are cut so we would have to use AI, time will tell. The only issues I've seen so far is they...
