I too have heard most first litters do not survive. I have had 1 doe so far who got it right the first time around. She had 5 kits in that litter, and we only lost 1. The other doe I have who has had babies in my care ate her first litter, but all 6 of her 2nd litter lived and did very well.
Looks like she won't be coming to me after all. Pretty sure the seller is backing out of the deal but doesn't want to say so. Last night it was like she was trying to talk me out of taking the rabbit. Then this morning she sent me a text saying she got called into work. I'm really bummed...I...
First litter from his parents were all blacks and torts. Second litter was him and the 2 sable points...we lost 2 out of that litter, but I think they would have also been torts. (hard to tell...we lost them in the first few days after birth.) Those are the only litters his mother has had, and...
Thanks! I will say genotypes confuse me. I really need to learn all that. I truly have no background info on the broken blue or the black. Here is what I can tell you about the tort. (He is one of my own babies that I kept.) His mother is a black vm doe, and his father was a black tort. He...
I am getting a magpie Lionhead doe on Friday! She is 1 year old and proven. Her litter is 3 months old. The lady I am getting her from said she can't really give me any advice. She purchased the doe along with 2 other bunnies recently for her kids, and they have decided this just isn't the...
The meat rabbits don't necessarily have to be colorful. I am more interested in having pretty rabbits that I don't have to kill and eat. Lol! I'm still not 100% on board with meat rabbits honestly...I'm not sure I'll be able to stomach eating an animal that I have raised, played with, etc. My...
My husband is working on a new rabbit building for me, and when it is finished we will be expanding our rabbitry a little bit. He wants to add some meat rabbits, and I want to add some color. What are some breeds that are pretty to look at?
Of my current Lionhead litter I had planned to keep 2 and sell the other. My favorite is a gorgeous little sable point doe. However, as she gets bigger, it becomes more and more clear that she just isn't good enough quality to breed when she's old enough. She is VM (one white foot and has...
Here are individual pics of all babies in my current 2 litters! First 3 pics are of my Lionhead babies. The other 6 are half Lionhead/half I don't know what. I have a friend who thinks the mother is a Havana, but I really don't know. The Lionheads are 5 weeks today, and the mixed breeds will be...
With temps in the triple digits here right now, I'm wondering, how do you all keep your outdoor bunnies cool in the summer? We don't have a big livestock barn or anything to put our rabbit cages in where we can point big fans on them, but my husband has installed small fans on the sides of the...
The sire to all of her kits was a black tort. Sadly, the neighbor's dogs got into his cage a couple weeks ago and let him out. We never found him, but I'm pretty sure the dogs caught him. :( The tort in her current litter (the kits in the pic posted have all been sold and are in their new...
Here are the kits from her first litter. 3 of the 4 have white noses, and 1 of those also has the white feet.
Her 2nd litter is almost 4 weeks old. There is 1 tort and 2 sable points. I believe the sable points might be vm as well...1 of them has a white paw, and both have blue eyes. I...
I have read that if you start your rabbitry with rabbits that do NOT have a pedigree, you can breed 3 generations and make your own pedigree. Is this correct, or is it vitally important for a new breeder to buy rabbits that come with a pedigree?
These are young...I wouldn't guess anymore than 12 weeks, so definitely not pregnant. They are being kept separate from my other rabbits in case of disease. 2 are does, 1 is a buck.
Would you ever buy rabbits from an auction, or do you always go to a breeder so you can get the pedigree? I bought 3 little Lionheads at an auction last night because I just couldn't pass them up. I only paid $3.00 per bunny for them! I'll have to get a pic to post later! :)
