I use a thing that, around here, is meant for sheep. It's a bag with a tight mesh bottom and canvas sides. There's a round hole cut in one side, and the top has hooks on each side. The goats do well with them (I have two), except that the boys tend to pull theirs off the wall and play with it...
I don't know any creature it's not good for, quite honestly. The dogs get a teensy amount in their 1-quart water bowl. Cats ditto. Goats have 5-gallon buckets just now, and get about an ounce a day. Chickens have a 3-gallon waterer and get about half that. Seems to work. What's this about...
I guess I'm with the herd here. If it's cold where you are, I'd stay home. Cold kids are not happy kids. Check the weather forecast, and follow your intuition. Farming is a whole lot of intuition!
