Bleating, uncomfortable doe with bellyache- what to do?

My 2-year old Nigerian doe seems sick this morning. She is crying out from time to time and seems uncomfortable. She looks a little more bloated than usual but her left side is not bigger than the right. I offered baking soda and she didn't want any but I put a little on her nose for her to lick...

9 month old ND buck- Is he able??

I have two Nigerian Dwarf does that are both 2 years old. I also have a 9-month old ND buck that I acquired back in February when he was 2-3 months old. All 3 have been living together since February. I expected the buckling to get interested in the females at a very young age but he hasn't...

My goat "run" is right next to the house. Maybe I should think about moving that. :D

Failed first-time breeding in Nigerian does. Where did I go wrong?

I have had so much trouble being able to tell when they are in heat. Kiki was hollering all morning today, which is unusual. This is the third time I've noticed this (the other two times were late last fall, several weeks apart) and I'm wondering if that is a sign of heat for her. Normally they...

Failed first-time breeding in Nigerian does. Where did I go wrong?

Thanks. I knew when I went with that particular breeder that she was moving out of state shortly afterwards. So I don't get a second shot with her. :(

Failed first-time breeding in Nigerian does. Where did I go wrong?

Hi, all. You guys have always been so helpful to me in the past. I'm hoping you can help me sort out the following situation. I have two healthy Nigerian Dwarf does that I took to be bred in early October, right when they turned one year old. They stayed at a nearby farm with a 6-month old buck...

What to feed Nigerian does that need to gain a little weight?

Hello, all! It has been a while since I posted here. My two Nigerian does just turned one year old and they just came home from two weeks at the breeders'. (First time being bred.) The breeder thinks they look a little thin and need to gain a little weight. I think she is right. They've been...

What is ideal age/weight for first breeding of Nigerian does?

My two little Nigerian Dwarf doelings are 7 months old and about 25-27 pounds. I know many people breed their does for the first time at 7-8 months but mine seem far too small to consider breeding yet. I think I remember reading that it is best to wait until the doeling reaches 40 lbs (for...

How should my LGD-breed family dog treat our goats?

That is so interesting. I did not know that. Hmmm, I sure don't want to be tempted into another dog (yet)! I've got my hands full! :)

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know. I will make sure everyone is clear on the no-play rule.

How should my LGD-breed family dog treat our goats?

Hi, all. A month ago we adopted Zeus, a wonderful Pyrenees/Anatolian cross pup. He's 10 months old now so he's very big but still growing. He is neutered and so far has been excellent with all human beings and animals that he has met. He never gets spooked and he's the gentlest dog I've ever...

Pictures of how we fenced our goat area

I know a few folks here have been following my foray into goat-keeping. We just finished fencing in a 20'x50' area for our two Nigerian Dwarf doelings. We used 48" tall 2"x4" no-climb horse fencing. I posted about it on my blog here and here. It is turning out really nicely so I thought I'd post...

Are my Nigerian Dwarf doelings eating enough hay?

They are really fat at the end of the day. I'm so not used to having ruminants! It's a whole different world from dogs, cats, chickens, and children! Heehee.

Here are their weights on three different days (today first): Today (12/27/13), 12/2/13, 11/24/13 Kiki: 17.5 lbs, 16, 13.5 Clementine: 14.5 lbs, 12.5, 11.5 Yesterday I bought a bale of coastal and a bale of alfalfa and gave them both. Are my Nigerian Dwarf doelings eating enough hay?

Let me ask you guys something else. What does your coastal look like? I keep reading that hay should be green but my coastal is yellow-brown. I do see them chewing their cuds so that is good. And I will take some new photos tomorrow!

Are my Nigerian Dwarf doelings eating enough hay?

I haven't weighed them recently so I'll do that tomorrow and report back. I give them about half a cup each of the sweet feed.
