I am extremely tempted to get a buck and I need yall to throw the cold, hard facts at me.

We have 2 Nigerian Dwarf does. Bought them as "bred" but they weren't. Blah. Taking them to a stud just sounds...complicated... to me. Wouldn't it be "easier" to just keep my own buck on hand?

I also tend to be a bit of a prepper so I often have that "what if" bouncing in my mind. What if something happens and I can't find a buck stud in the future? Better to have my own on the property, right?

We're on 1/3 of an acre but are working on fencing off an area for the goats (mainly so they'll stop using my porch as a toilet). Will be able to rotate them some and can eventually create a seperate area for a buck but we may end up having to dry lot them all (just ignore the fact that we don't have enough land to grow hay should we ever have to truly become self sufficient 😉).

Biggest issue is buck stink. But, it's not REALLY as bad as everyone says...right?:hide
I mean, we had one neighbor who couldn't stand the smell of our Kune pigs so we sold them but she won't be able to smell the buck like she could the pigs, right?

(As an aside, do Nigerian Dwarf bucks stink year round or do they have just one season of stinky rut?)

How complicated is it to keep a buck in city limits? Is it worth a try?

Not an issue. Maybe seller will breed them for you! Free! Looks takes less than an HR if she's ready....the buck is ALWAYS ready.

Never gonna happen....always plenty for sale!

Wow...you REALLY want to buy a buck!! 😁😎🙄😁😁🤣

Yes!! They stink in rut!! A lot of stink!

I'm usually an agreeable enabler but, since your neighbors are obviously not wanting you to farm, this would surely push your luck, IMO. Then you might be facing getting rid of the girls you have too. When a neighbor starts, they rarely stop. 💔. Sad but true.

I too am anti-buck.

It is actually VERY easy to take a doe on a "date".

I had full size girls, and still they fit in the back of my midsized SUV. It was easy to find dates. Even here in nowhere-ville I had a selection of bucks.

You do have to do a blood test, but I think that is a good thing, to keep track of your herd health. The blood test is easy to do yourself.

When you do not have a buck, you can pick a different buck at each breeding. Nice to have the selection, instead of being stuck with a single buck.

Also, if you own the buck you have to feed it 24/7, and have very sturdy fencing. Just such a headache.

Life is peaceful with only the girls.
