I'm getting a lamancha doeling in the spring but I am not having any luck finding someone with a buck in the area (although I have a lot of time to do so), I'm back to thinking about AI since I hate to rely on other people in regards to the timing of breeding anyway. I haven't found anyone in the area that offers AI service or storage tank space either. SO I'm hoping to learn how to do it myself. DH watched someone AI a pig last year and said it was super easy, but I'm a planner and really like to know what I'm doing. I don't want to hurt her when the time comes. Do any of you know of any instructional material for artificially inseminating goats? I've found a couple of good instructions online but nothing with video or diagrams of what I should be looking at... :/

I learned from someone else so I am not sure about online sources. You may want to try an find someone to learn from. Have you tried youtube, it seems like there is a "how to" video for everything on there. You may also want to try your vet, I know several vets that will do AI. Also you are going to need to find some sort of storage for any semen you order as it must stay frozen until you are ready to thaw it and use it.

AI on a goat is much different than AI on a pig and more complicated. It is more like AI of a cow except you are doing it by sight rather than by feel.

Also if the doe has never kidded before AI is going to be much harder and have a lower conception rate than on a doe who has kidded before.

Let me tell you, just because you watch someone AI an animal and it looks easy doesn't mean it is! I've watched hundreds of cows be AI'd and it looks super easy and then I took the AI course and it's much harder to get the hang of. Especially those first few animals!

Tell me about it! I guess I'll just keep searching for an AI tech to come do it for me. The vet has someone that does it on cows, never on goats but it's a little different on a goat. oh well

I concur...pigs you can AI with your eyes closed, just keep twisting until you have the straw "locked", then let it go....a cow is harder but once you get the idea of the "sleeve thing" and what the cervix feels like it isn't too hard...but a goat...that is a new ball game...I will be going to a seminar on AI in goats on November 6th at Donor Solutions...then I will be a pro...or, more likely, realize I better keep by buck

Yeah there's a seminar about 2 hours from here that I wanted to get into too, but it's filled up before they even decide on the date! They let people sign up early. I don't know how that's fair but knowing that maybe I'll sign up now for next year's seminar. :rant
