I bought some nice green alfalfa cubes at TSC, but they are hard as a rock, In the past I have soaked in water, does this take away any of the nutrients??? theres no way some of these girls could get this down. I tried breaking them apart and don't have the strenght right now to do it. Thanks.

Soaking won't hurt the nutrients as long as you don't add so much water that it's turning into a soup. Just add enough so they're softer with no water left to pour off. I'd also soak just before each feeding so you don't have soggy alfalfa sitting around for hours or days.

I'd start buying the alfalfa pellets. Lot easier on you and the goats. ;)

You can also smash them with a hammer to break them up. I tossed a couple into a 5gal plastic bucket and then dropped a splitting maul on them a couple times.

We were only able to find the cubes at first also. Breaking them up into smaller pieces(not pulverizing them) is a chore, but our herd of nigies & nigi-pygs are able to eat chuncks that are 1/4-1/2 inch thick with no problems.

Check to see if you have a farmer's union near you. They are like a Blue Seal, but carry a wider variety. They have compressed wrapped bales of alfalfa hay that is much fresher than the cubes.

A question: Can't soaking the hay cause problems such as colic??

Ask your guys at TSC to order you some if they don't have any in stock. TSC carries pellets in most places.
