I took Luna's blanket off today and the first thing she did was look around at her tail. I know for a fact she'd pooped about 10 minutes beforehand so I just thought she was interested because she hadn't seen her actual body in ages lol. She did it again when I was down in the field a little while ago, but I know she pooped because I kick all the poop piles over when I'm down there and there was a fresh one by the hay pile.

Could she just need deworming again? Or am I making a big thing out of nothing? I thought I could hear gut sounds, and she hasn't lost her appetite, as I type this she is munching on hay. She is drinking as well and her poops aren't at all dry.

Oh also, I know roundbales are dusty by nature, they're so big and most have at least a little dust. I noticed this morning that Mylie's week or so old hay bale (now almost gone) is kind of dusty. She's still eating it, and she's still interested in it and this is the same horse who won't eat old hay lol so I think it still tastes good to her. Should I be terribly concerned? I'm going to probably pull it open and role out the rest for her. Its right now just the "core" left and some outside bits. Being that the end of season is coming up, everyones roundbales are starting to show their age a little. These bales also don't have as much alfalfa in them as the other stuff we had so they aren't as awesome quality, but I understand that and the horses don't mind.

:idunno I'm going to unroll it tonight and see what the inside is like, if its fine then I'll leave it... if not I'll take it out and replace with the other bale sitting outside the field.

What are you concerned about--colic? If she's colicky, she'll BITE HER BELLY, and try to roll. Gut sounds are good and normal. I've been around colicky horses before--only mine once--and their belly gets hard, they sweat and act very uncomfortable. You would too, if your intestines were twisting!! If she's wormy she'll be looking for a tree or post to rub her tail on. If your hay is dusty, I imagine she drink more water, just like we cannot eat a hard boiled egg without drinking something.

Just an FYI: In the future, when you can afford it, try to enclose your round bales inside. I had to feed outside for 14 years---AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!--WAY too much wasted hay. I'm sure that you're just a worried "mom"--I think she'll be fine. :hugs

lol we have absolutely no storage for roundbales. Our barn is damp and the hay loft is crud.

I was wrapping them in snow fence and it was working excellently but its the end of the season and they're eating less hay now since its much warmer and so the last few times I've left the bale wrap off them.

I'm looking to build in the next year or so some little bale houses LOL with roofs over them in the fields, but I need to get my chicken house built and the loafing shed as well. I am getting some small squares next year as well for emergency hay incase we run out of roundbales and the roundbale guy isn't home.

:idunno I've never had a horse colic before lol I've never seen her rub before, but they would be due for a worming soon so I might go ahead and worm them. Luna might just have been shocked that she actually had a body not a pink blob LOL since she's been wearing her blanket for ages.
