Hi, I am new to the forum from South Jersey. We are moving in the spring and would like to have a few sheep. We have about 2 acres of field and would like to use the rotational grazing method. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to have portable fencing that is not electric. We have 3 boys 6 and under and are worried about them getting shocked. Just wondering if anyone used portable fencing that was not electric or if there were any other ideas out there that work for you. Thanks so much!

We made moveable pens out of pig pannels. We just would pound in a couple of fence posts and ziptye the pannel on leave it for the week and then move it the next weekend.

You would probably want to use cattle or combination panels instead of pig panels. Pig
panels are MUCH shorter, won't keep out dogs or energetic sheep. You STILL will probably
want to run electric so sheep don't stick heads thru the squares.

Sorry to say that learning about fences being "hot" is part of farm living. It will probably
only take one time touching, and all the kids will be fence broke, NEVER touch it again. It is like
with a woodstove, kid has to learn to STAY AWAY from the pretty fire. You warn them,
but usually that only works for a bit, so you need to CONTROL the woodstove situation
while you are teaching them safety. It can be a LOT worse, having the woodstove get
touched when you are not there, or kid getting too close for a more severe
burn by not feeling the pain fast enough, with kid reactions being slow. There are a LOT of
dangerous things on a farm. Heck, the sheep may knock the kids down or run over them!
As a parent, you need to do the kid training to get kid responding well, BEFORE situations
can happen. You need the correct, PROMPT response to the direction/order given! Sorry,
there CAN NOT be any "don't wanna" from the kid when you give a direction, or someone
will be hurt. Even little kids MUST do as they are told, can't emphasize this enough. Under
6yrs is not too small to understand and DO as they are told.

We made a family rule after the first kid. No vehicle moves without the Driver locating the
child/all children, physically EVERY TIME. Other parent can be holding child, child is in the house
with other adult, Driver can strap kids into the vehicle. You KNOW FOR SURE where all the kids
are, know they will STAY THERE, so THEN vehicle can drive away. None of OUR kids
were ever hurt with a vehicle on the farm. Other people were not so lucky, the paper
reports a couple kids (tiny toddlers to older kids) being injured or killed locally EVERY YEAR.
Each parent thinks the OTHER one has the kid, no one CHECKS physically to LOCATE the kid,
and that is when kid gets hit. City or country, small kids are easy to hurt, so you as the parents
have to do the extra steps, double and triple checking to keep things as safe as possible.

Sheep are not the brightest, WILL be sticking heads thru or under anything they can for that
tiny blade of grass. So keeping them OFF the panels, out of the holes, could save their lives
with having an electric fence to prevent the reaching problem. Panels are handy for a lot
of things, can usually be resold for not much less than you paid for them. Still a good buy,
less than store price!
