Anyone with Highland cattle on here? I have always loved the look of the breed and think their horns are amazing. I was just wondering if anyone has them and can give some info on them?

Started raising them about a year ago with a herd of 3 bred mature cows (about 5 year olds), & a steer. They were bred to an angus bull, we have since added a Highland bull & our highland/angus cross calves (2 heifers, 1 steer). Our plan is to keep the heifers & breed them as well, they aren't related to our bull. I'll answer whatever questions I can.

I was just wanting to know more about them. I know the are from Scotland and are used mostly for beef. I know the sizes of them and that they are the oldest registered breed. I've heard that they are very good in nearly all climates and they are disease resistant and don't need a ton of care. So really any info you have or care to share. Maybe you could say why you chose the breed and what you like best.

I'll give you a little background on us. We started with cattle in the spring of 2011 with two Jersey steers (one was a cross) to finish for the freezer in the fall. They were a good bit of work grain 2x a day, they got out a couple times, even with them, a horse & goat I still ended up cutting the pasture, etc. needless to say I was happy to see them go but I did miss seeing cattle in the pasture & my daughter (2 yr old) was constanly asking "where are the cows ?"
So I started researching & looking on Craigslist, came across Highlands. I didn't want a high maintenance breed, something that needed to barned up in winter, etc because I own a snowplowing company so durring a storm I don't need another worry. We got our first Highlands in November, from a older farmer that was getting out due to age & an injury, true to what everyone says they stayed outside all winter. They have two run in areas they never used them until it got warm to get out of the sun. Ours only get hay, pasture mineral lick & water, we only keep grain on hand for problems. We did have some issues with the second group we bought, if you do a search I'm sure it will come up. From our experience they do better in the less favorable weather than the heat of summer.
